All About Measuring Home-School Distance

Hi all,


We always hear about within 1km and 1-2km criteria.

Now I have this question: Canberra primary school is within 1km from my house, but almost at the border of the 1km (around 900m), and Wellington primary school is just next to my block. So, will my kid's chance of balloting to Canberra be reduced because my house is almost hitting the 1km, and some more there's already another school nearer?

When the school does the balloting, does the actual distance influence the chance of balloting? For example, will those kids staying 100m from school actually have higher chance compared to those staying 900m from school? Or will Canberra primary even reject my registration of balloting with them since there's another school nearer to my house?

Anyone has this experience to share?

At the moment, based on current rules, no different for both schools as the criteria is within 1km, then 1-2km and lastly >2km.

But whether MOE will change rules in near future that would be anybody's guess.

For those schools at temporary holding place while the original school location is being upgraded, when it comes to distance, it is based on original sch location or the temp holding place

Hi a fren was asking :- can she use a rented unit(be it a hdb or condo) as the address for reg of d school while she already has a HDB unit ? N is it true d school will only look at d father’s IC for the address ? Pls advise, thanks.

Hi ,regarding distance to school. Can I assume the one map is the correct indication of the distance to school? Is there any other more accurate way to ensure I am definitely within the 1 km to the school of my choice ? Please advise. Thanks

Yes. Schools use onemap, too.

Use the address that your child will be staying in throughout his/her Primary school years to register the child. It can be a rented or owned property.

However, it is a criminal offense to rent an address for P1 registration and not have the child stay there as his/her main address while in Primary school. The culprit is a cheat who will find very little sympathy amongst parents who use bone fide addresses for P1 registration.

Now the temp unit is more than 1km from the sch. We moved into the new place when our kid was in k2. So which address shd I use or which address would the distance be calculated?

do you have the \"Agreement of Lease\" for the new unit and that you would be able to move into the new unit within 2 years of your child's entry into P1?

if yes, you can use the address of the new unit
if no, you can only use the address of the current temp address
