Godly Woman:
I like the NYGH school facilities more than RGSS
May I know why you choose NYGH over RGSS?nhps2012:
Hello, I am a P6 2012 student who just completed PSLE
(haha I'm using my mother's account). Honestly, PSLE isn't as difficult as everyone thinks. So long you put in the hard work, there is no doubt that you will do reasonably well. Its just about the same as a normal exam you know, except you take the exam in the hall and well, the score determines what school you go to.
I think you should set targets- aim how much you want to get for each subject, what school you want to get into and so on and so forth. You (or you should bring your child) to a few secondary school which your child is aiming to enter on the day of the Secondary School's Open House. Well for my case, I was brought to NYGH & RGSS, and I prefer NYGH so i worked very hard throughout the year so that maybe i could get a good score to get into that school.
All the best to all P6 2013 Students !! :snuggles: May God bless you!
Also, NYGH is much nearer to my home as compared to RGSS. It is also a SAP school, thus I believe it can help me improve my chinese (:
hi im also using my mums acc
:mainly bc nygh is a chinese sch and i prefer 2 go to chinese sch :scared: :please:

Do you mind if you child does her work and have background music? Mine insists she must have background music whilst doing her homework at home. She says this will speed her up and help her concentrate. I am just worried that this will affect her concentration level when it comes to the real exam without a sound.
Mine insist too. His reason is that the house is too quiet. He said this with teary eyes. How not to give in? Even I also think that the house is too quiet as the TV is off and our neighbours are quiet too. -

Maybe opt for soothing music pieces, instead of pop songs?
My younger boy hums to himself. My elder boy needs absolute silence. -
I share same sentiments as BeContentand Janet Lee and same time agree with ngl2010and Jennifer.
House is too quiet in the afternoons when she is back with only herself and the helper and she gets sleepy clearing her work so she said background noise keeps her alert. Her reliance on it makes me worry if it could affect her concentration level in the actual exam.
I dont allow naps as it will cause her to sleep past 11 pm. I prefer she clears her stuff and goes to bed by 10 pm. Some friends had advised me to let her have shut eyes and when she is wake, off the music whilst she is doing her homework. But to be able to wake her up from a 15 min nap is itself a problem. Sign, no win-win situation here. -

Mine still take naps...or else they do not have the capacity to do anything...esp my son who has to revise or get homework done.
When son was in P6 last year, he was so tired everyday after school...to deprive him of that power nap is as good as not getting any quality work...furthermore, he had at 730pm. When he got up, he was so refreshed.
This year, his workload is heavier, with Lit/Geog/History to revise.
I set 2 alarms, switched off the snooze button. My kids nap for 45 min...to last till 11pm.
I understand it is difficult for working mums because kids are so tired and helper cannot insist they get up. -

I am working so my helper can't really control them.
If they wake up after a short nap, and still feels tired, will they be able to focus and do proper work? It has been a hassle getting them to bed early (before or by 10pm), keeping them awake in the afternoon or waking them up from naps. -
I do understand how difficult it can be to wake up…but the longer they sleep, the more tired they will be…and then it isn’t a power nap.
Waking up at 6 am (for some even earlier to catch the school bus), after a long day in school and on those days with PE, how to stay awake till 9pm ?
Hubby was upset when I mentioned son in Sec 1 to continue taking naps…but he can see for himself (when he was on leave one day) how tired son is.
With that 30-45 min nap (more tired on days with PE), they can stretch longer. Getting homework done alone is insufficient. My son’s Math tutor (P6) gave him quite a bit of extra practice. -

Hi Janet, I'm nutty mum following your forum quite closely. My DS is also in Sec 1 this year. Life in Sec 1 now is likely working full time from 6am to 6pm with the ongoing CCA and studying is a part time job(in the evening).I do understand how difficult it can be to wake up...but the longer they sleep, the more tired they will be...and then it isn't a power nap.

Because of this arrangement with CCA (sports), I'm also facing the dilemma of choosing one that is less strenuous although many says the kids would able to cope later. Having said that, will my kid able to? Given the limited time in the evening to finish up the homework, the kid is totally mentally and physically drained, left alone the ongoing tests coming weeks. CCA in secondary schools is no longer that kids are able to choose what they are passionate about but rather the CCA choose you!
It's really another stressful phase to cope after the PSLE! -

Having background music while studying is very popular with students aged 12 onwards and especially for secondary/JC n undergraduates. Just take a look at those students cramming in Macdonald's. It baffles me how they concentrate with all that noise and loud music going on. They usually listen to pop which I find distracting. I feel music without lyrics does wonders instead. Classical music relaxes the mind and encourages cognitive thinking. So it is good that my kid listens to classical pieces while doing Mathematics. Be selective though as some pieces can lull you to sleep! -
We have all been to school before.
But studying at Mcdonalds didn’t happen during my time. Up till now, I can only work with music in the background when I iron clothes…something which doesn’t require much concentration.
My son will get to know today whether he is selected for the CCA…it is a whole year of waiting…from PSLE results, to sec school posting and now this CCA thing. Hopefully his CCA is on Fridays and involvement is minimal…common tests are coming up soon after CNY. Sorry off topic…this is for PSLE 2013.
After CNY, schools will push forth.
