Personally, I detest the idea of affiliation. All PSLE students should be given an equal footing based on their results to get into their dream schools. Affiliation gives students from affiliated schools an unfair advantage over their peers cos they do not get posted based on merits. Giving students a chance to apply DSA is another unfair advantage but in this case it is beneficial to both the school and student so I do not oppose the practice. I knew of a secondary school which overall standard was pulled down by the affiliated students posted there as most students took it as an easy way out and are complacent due to the 'safety net'. Their attitude was if I don't do well in my PSLE, I can always go to xxx school. In the end, the principal of the secondary school decided to make changes to stop the flow. πŸ˜“ One of my students told me that when the whole cohort did badly in their mid year exams due to the exceptionally tough questions set, the principal consoled them by stating that she expected them to continue their sec education there instead of applying for DSA in other schools. Therefore, the poor results reflected in their report books would not affect them in anyway cos most of them would be admitted due to affiliation. (This school runs a primary and secondary school program and I think many of you can guess which school it is without me spelling it out). Doesn't this breed complacency? πŸ˜› Yes, and there is elitism also. :!:

He is a whole 7 years younger. Maybe got a bit of genes for passion. Better shift out of this topic. This is the COP track... maybe start another track on alternative to Singapore education system. I have a whole lot of tricks to share that there are alternatives to the Singapore system, though I have yet figured a way out of the PSLE, and survive till they reach about 14 to go to uni. Ha ha...

Woow 2ppaamm I am impressed  . Is there a new thread started, I am for sure innterested in reading more about 'alternatives to singapore system' :celebrate:

            Hi micko07,

Don't worry, I'm not offended at all. I, too would not bother to go to great extend like volunteering to get my child a place. However, NYPS' track record speaks for itself. Which school can boast of having more than 56% of its cohort getting an A* for Maths taking into consideration the public outcry regarding this year's tough Maths paper? Also, not many schools (not sure if there is any other) have track record of approximately 44% of its cohort getting a T-score of 250 & above and approximately 30% of their students being successful in their DSA attempts. I am very blessed that my children are able to get into NYPS and the Raffles schools through their own merits. Really, I will be equally happy if they are in the NY/HC schools.

I believe you will do very well in your A levels next year. And thanks for your contribution to this forum. πŸ˜„
I agree with micko07 on his point on affiliation - the \"injustice\" in denying a better student and giving it to a weaker student. It is not about whether the primary school is good (eg NYPS) and its students therefore should be given priority as given in the argument.

I did not suscribe to the primary school branding thing and sent my kids to the school just across the road. However I am having second thoughts now after this \"PSLE\" experience.

The classes in my kids school are packed to 40 per class even for the better classes. The range of abilities is wider and consists of a variation of abilities (the HAMALA) thingy. Teachers' expectations are very low.

It takes a greater effort for the non branded school students to excel. Perhaps the issue lies with MOE not being able to ensure some minimum level of consistency across the board?

Hi harini, VitoRelax, I didn't appeal to NJC eventually but went to DHS on 22nd afternoon to appeal. We received good news fm them yesterday while we were holidaying in Malacca. However, I also appealed to HCI last week before the posting results & still waiting for them to reply. Harini, you're right, that's a nice problem to have. Now I in a dilemma cos' need to sign the letter of offer at DHS 2moro but I still hope to receive gd news fm HCI. My DH said I very greedy leh. Think I will try calling HCI 2moro see got any news or not.

Congrats!!! At least one in the bag.

Why don't you go down to HCI and try and talk to the vice principal / principal about your dilema. Tell them how badly u want to join their school in spite of having DHS confirmation. Mayyyybbeeee they would consider ur case favourably and give u a reply sooner...

Worth a try lah, and congrats again. When it comes to our kids, I think we are all the same want nothing but the best for them, so its ok being a little greedy :ugogirl: .
