I was told to expect marks to drop as much as 10marks across the board for most children. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. :xedfingers:

But I will never tell my boy this.

My child school teacher told them directly last week that their mark are expected to drop at least 20 as compare to p4.

I read/heard a lot about this big jump in difficulty and big drop in marks. Any knowledgeable parent care to share the reason(s) that constitute to the above? I'm clueless how to help my dd n am getting cold feet, just thinking of her studies. She tells me she will do her best but her engine is still at stationery-mode 😓
Yes, after the long holidays, My DD also bit slow. She likes to work hard (of course with constant reminders) but tend to forget easily. That is the big head ache I am facing.

You can print out the past year papers to compare or assessment books. Son said for chinese, comprehension passages are longer. Tutor said there will be two comprehension open ended. For english, non fiction cloze passage and comprehension are his key weakness for paper two. He can barely pass. For science, the combination of topics in a question, asking them to apply instead of so straight forward. For math, the bigger numbers and more steps. And I am only looking at the first few topics of assessment books/papers!

DS has talk with me after school and told me not to worry if his grades fall this year cos it is normal. He is so funny… seems like he is preparing me for it and he is not going to do anything abt it.

Thank you everyone for your posts. I learn a lot from your generosity to share.

My P5 girl is hardly coping well in her languages. I hope I will not turn into an evil mother nagging DD1 all the way to PSLE…

But there is hardly any time to do ‘extras’ with most kids staying back in school for 3 to 4 times a week. In fact, barely enough time to complete homework. I convinced my dd to drop her music pursual, no time to practise anyway.

I always wonder how some kids can cope with so many activities, music, CCA in school team, they probably have superb time management skills!

                  Sleepy,

Some kids can multi task and knowledge retention very high, that is, one glance, can remember and apply. My husband is one such kind. He can eat, listen to me and play his smartphone game at the same time. He can play computer games in the living room and yet listen in selectively to the news we were watching in my bedroom. While waiting for his game to load,he will fold clothings. Even after a long day at work, when he reach home, he will change fish tank water if it gets filthy even before he rest.
Lol. But he is also lazy wrt stuff that does not interest him la!

OT already 😓 but my p5 seems to take after me....inefficient, my husband said. 😛

Same here. DD has decided to stop her music lessons too and I had to reluctantly agree cos she just doesn't have time to practice.

Just to share with u on music interest. I was in dilemma too as whether to let her continue when PSLE approaching. She decided to keep her once a week lessons. We stopped the lesson abt 6months before PSLE, but she still practice to release study stress. I think kids need something else beside study to channel their boredom and divert their attention for a while, thus gaining a fresher felling when they go back on revision.

Anyway, I just take her music as a hobby for her. Now that she is in sec1, she opted for Music Elective Program. She has much fun and exposure from it. She even started to take up second instrument, this time I oblige even though I am silently worry if she can cope with so many more subjects in hand.

I don't know where she heading in the future, worry if she concentrate too much on music then her academic maybe neglected. But again, I tell myself to let her be as long as it is a positive thing. Hopefully she manage well.

I think kids who has interest are happier kids, they know what they like and take pride in it, and will be motivated to go for it. Interest is optional and subjective, so this may give a sense of freedom to choose, express and excel. PSLE is for everyone, and kind of mandatory and boring...but what to do, they still have to kill it and prove they can win it.

Good luck for all the PSLE prep, my DS will be taking psle 2014 too...this time I am :faint:.

My dd's number 1 hobby is reading not music. She's a giantic bookworm, reads anything from encyclopedia to reader digests to survival series comics. I'm not sure if there's such as term as over-reading although she certainly seems to be way too engrossed whenever she reads, to the extent of blocking out my voice. So her incentive is if she manages to complete homework quickly (no dilly dally), she can read as much as she likes to wind down
