Is it the people, or is it the leadership that maketh the country?

Were the German people universally evil and anti semitic, or was it a charismatic leader with great political nous and a resonant (though flawed) philosophy that drove Germany to catastrophe in the 1930s.

Are the 25% of unemployed Greeks and Spaniards lazy people who don’t go find work, or is it a failure of government and leadership that has landed them where they are?

My maid from a SEA country is one smart lady. She learns quickly, is good with the kids, works hard, doesn’t complain. If she has been born in Singapore, who knows what she could have achieved? Honestly, the sky would have been the limit, I feel. Doctor, educator, banker, I think she would been able to do it. It’s too late for her now, in her 40s. The country did not provide the opportunities, either in education, or economic advancement, to develop her potential.

Are Singaporeans a whole lot smarter than Malaysians, Indonesians, Taiwanese? Your Myanmese colleague less capable than you? He somehow has inferior genes? Do we work harder then these people? Is it in our DNA?

      You know the answer…

What differentiates Singapore from our neighbors, and indeed, many other countries, is the quality of our leadership. This has been cited over and over and over again by think tanks, leaders in other nations, multinationals.

We kid ourselves when we say our success is just down to our people. Yes, the people are the engine, but who’s the driver? A bus can go over a cliff if not for an attentive driver (see Germany, Greece, Spain).

So the question now is what drives a country, govt or people? And goes back to the driver and co-driver again? Oh boy... I am not a cop...am I allowed to wave a white flag now? 😂 :siam:

Don't :torchme: me ah.... 🦆 i am just thinking aloud....

The money generated by COE is huge (1 car is $90,000+) and there is money from ERP too. Why can't these money be used to subsidize and upgrade the public transport? Currently what is the money used for? There is a separate road tax that I think is used to upgrade roads....

It is a question that I do not want to think about 😂 ...but which I don't mind listening to others' analysis.

Half a term left before the next GE, I don't mind giving a chance for an alternative party/ candidate to proof themselves, but I also want to vote for the alternative party which has a higher chance of winning. Just my take.
