exactly LimlimAn MP primary role is the people's representative.. A minister's role is to help run the country.
Hence, we need a highly qualified person to be a minister.. but not necessarily for an MP.
It is more import for an MP to be someone with empathy and compassion, and not qualifications..
Seems that the pple have started to realise this..
the PAP obviously still has not realise that many of their MPs boh cho engkai cho aye kang.
The MPs primary roles and duties have not been executed wholeheartedly for far too long, and WP has shown and led the way with their earlier victories.
local issues like Rivervale Plaza multiple delays and inconveniences, lack of amenities, road improvements, etc has largely been neglected or dragged on unnecessarily.
I remembered in younger days, MPs are ever so helpful, even the likes of LimBH and such. Now ? a handful yes, the majority ? kanasai. many so-called high flyers flown in just to hold high positions and leave the MP duties mainly to the grassroot people , :razz: suxxx
I predict more of the same in 2016, unless the MIWs clean house and buck up. -

I'm not a 100% supporter of PAP BUT low birth rate is every Singaporean's problem and I agree that we cannot be a welfare state.This by election will be a great example for Mr Heng to assure kiasu parents that being in elite school is not everything.
Elite scholars in the garment only know how to handle problem with money. The worst money policy they made so far is to turn the young couples into beggars by taking other Singaporean money to give birth. Wat a shame.
The second worst sinful shAmeful money policy is telling the really needy that the garment does not want to turn our country into a wat nonsense social welfare stare.
It is so good tat PE introdue a OP to help these elites to wake up. -

Like that chicken rice story, PAP probably genuinely do not understand what went wrong with a formula that worked so well the last 50 years. Whatever recent modification they made to that proven recipe still end up rubbing people the wrong way regardless.

SPP's Chiam See Tong congratulates MP-elect Lee Li Lian
SINGAPORE: The secretary-general of the Singapore People's Party, Mr Chiam See Tong, has congratulated MP-elect Ms Lee Li Lian and the Workers' Party for their decisive win in the Punggol East by-election.
Mr Chiam said the wide margin of victory shows that Singaporeans increasingly want more democracy and more opposition members in Parliament.
He said, together with the Workers' Party, the Singapore People's Party will work hard in Parliament to scrutinise the government's population White Paper and the 2013 Budget.
The Singapore People's Party will also speak up for Singaporeans and make sure no Singaporean is left behind.

By-election result can't be taken as trend in future: Low Thia Khiang
SINGAPORE: Workers' Party (WP) chief Low Thia Khiang said the result of the Punggol East by-election should not be seen as a trend for the future.
He said a by-election is different from a general election.
He believes that in a by-election, voters of Punggol East had no worries that they would \"accidentally throw out the government\".
He said the message is very clear that the role of WP is that of check and balance on the government.
\"We give them time and we don't agitate. I think the message got through and they gave us the mandate to make sure that the People's Action Party does its job,\" said Mr Low.
Mr Low said the party has made it clear that it is not ready to be the next or alternative government, as it has limited resources and does not want to give Singaporeans false expectations.
He said the government is competent but it needs to re-prioritise and address the issues related to costs of living.
He said even though policies have been reviewed, policy u-turns need time to take effect.
Mr Low said his party will play its role in checking on the government but warned against politicising everything.
He said that as a rational and responsible party, WP should work with the government to bring about change and improvements.
Mr Low, who spoke to reporters before a thank-you parade in Punggol East on Sunday morning, said while democracy is important for political vibrancy, it's not productive to politicise everything.
The party will have seven elected seats in Parliament, after its candidate, Ms Lee Li Lian, won the by-election in the single-seat ward with 54.5 per cent of the vote share.

PAP's Koh reflects on by-election outcome
SINGAPORE: The People's Action Party's (PAP) candidate in the Punggol East by-election, Dr Koh Poh Koon, said it is important to have a good strong team and to continue to be sincere with residents.
He cited these as the key takeaways from his by-election bid.
Dr Koh, who spoke to reporters before setting off to thank residents on Sunday morning, said his vote share of 43.7 per cent \"wasn't too bad\".
He said he is proud to have done his best.
Asked if he will run in the next General Election, Dr Koh said he will need to think deeper about this.
He said he will be analysing the results and will wait for the prime minister's decision on where he can contribute in.
In Saturday's by-election, the Workers' Party's Lee Li Lian won the seat, garnering 54.5 per cent of valid votes.

I am not surprised PAP lost. This goes to show that we do need something to represent us in parliament. Yes, Singapore birth rate is at an alarmingly low figure...i do applaud govt's efforts introduced to increase number of babies, but the attractive package is a separate issue from by-election.Are u surprise with the result?
I quite shock leh. 1st I didn't expect PAP to lose. Secondly, I am shock that WP win so much.
We do not need more elites like doctors or lawyers in parliament...but YES to more people who understand commoners like us. -
