giving haircuts at home

Hi,

Has anyone provided haircuts at home to boys and men? There are so many hairclippers available in the market. Are they worth the price? How much can I hope to save by giving haircuts to my DS and DH at home? Of course, I will continue to visit my hairdresser.

It depends on how particular you are with the final "look" versus your skills. Money-wise, you will definitely save if you use the scissors a few times. My ds won’t go to a hairdresser, so we had to rely on MIL whenever she feels up to it. Eventually I bought my own scissors (the basic range). So far I’ve trimmed and layered his hair three times, and the scissors cost me about $30+ - one simple straight scissors and one for layering. So if I cut twice more for him it would be worth the money I guess… I’m a lousy hairdresser by the way. I watch youttube demos before I cut, haha.

Hi. I have been giving my boys haircuts since they were 4yo ever since the elder boy cannot sit still at the hair dresser. I use the Philips hair clipper designed for kids which comes with straight scissor & hair cutting technique CD and bought a pigeon hair scissor for layering. My skills are limited but so far they are happy watching cartoons from iPad while I cut their hair. The good thing is they can go straight to bath after the hair cut since I set up everything in the bath room and just wash away the mess. Saved a few hundred these 4years since I have 2 boys and I can trim their hair as & when it’s untidy.

I have been cutting my son’s hair since he’s born till now. If we were to go by $7 per hair cut, that would have saved me hundreds by now. As far as I can remember, I had bought 2 scissors, 1 scissors for layering, 2 "pen knife" looking tool for layering, 2 hair cut poncho. Each range from $2 (from daiso) to $4.90 for a pair of scissors. Definitely save $$$.


And I can cut anyway I like, so long as my son looks presentable and the hair length suit the weather.

I only help in trimming the fringe or the back…others leave to the salon.

I used to do this - cutting hair for folks back home. This is because I’m pretty good with the scissors, having master cutting hair during school days when a couple of friends my mine would cut each other hair.


These days I no longer do it because of travel commitments. But its a good thing because you really need not worry about cost of haircut going up or about changing of hairstylists, and you can do it anytime you wish.

I bought 2 pairs of hair-cutting scissors for children at a salon and beauty supply shop next to a pastry shop (specialised in pineapple tarts) in Middle Road.


When DS was younger, he has little hair and only requires slight trimming when the hair grew long.

Now DS is 5, he has grown more hair and thickened in texture. He's enjoying hair cut as I gave him iPad while I take my own sweet time to practice on this white mice.

I only use the thinning shears (with teeth) as it's easy to cut and create layering look, normal scissors requires skills and the cut look too harsh for amateur like me. I will observe how the hair-stylists cut and handle the hair and try to apply when practicing on DS.

DH prefers my hair cut to those cut by the professionals. :oops:

lol i also want home cut. but i tried asking my wife to cut my hair using those electric shaver, crew cut style no fuss, she scared she cut off my ears! her argument that cosmetic surgery to glue back my ears, the savings from diy cut not worth it.

now haircut like qb and ec increase to $12, very \"expensive\" compared to diy at home!

I have a set of scissors for trimming my daughter’s bangs. And then I have an electric clipper for my son’s no. 2 cut. My son hates getting his hair cut and screams bloody murder - so I keep it to no. 2 botak cut so that it’s faster and easier to handle. My friend’s husband clips his own hair and their son’s hair… money saved is for the mommy to goto saloon, worh…
