I heard it's quite common that 1st generation SCs will arrange for their parents to move to Singapore to help take care of their children

If they are not PR, they can't stay long, can they? Social visit pass, but I doubt they are allowed to stay.

My neighbors are PRs. The mum also managed to get a PR at 60+ years old. And guess what, she visits polyclinic and NUH for her hypertension. The PR was issued many years ago, dunno if they still allow that now. And it's not hearsay, I know them personally.

I have PRC friends who are SG or PR now. They apply 10 year long term visa for their parents to come and take care of their kids. A few old people digging into the trash bins down my flat are all PRC people. Even that kind of carton boxes collection is facing competition

aiyo, you live near me? there is a stiff competition in trash collection in my estate. initially there was only one residential garung guni old man doing the job for years. sometime 1 yr ago, a msian old lady joined in the trade and doing it leisurely. then about half yr ago, an old PRC couple started it in an overzealous manner - they behave like scavengers and pick up unwanted stuff within minutes after the throwers walk off from the garbage collection areas and work until 10.30 at night...they are everywhere... i even witnessed them waiting with menacing glares, hoping to ransack a neighbour's place when their movers leave... :slapshead:

Saw one digging into recycle bins and left the remaining thing that are not suitable all over the ground.

Nowadays garung guni do not buy cardboard boxes from people, but pick up from bins? I have tried asking garung guni if can sell to them, but here no one wants to buy.

My guess is, less, but will still be present. So in a way, this NS issue is a bit of a red herring, and making new citizens do NS solves nothing, other than some equalization of terms, and soothing some hurt feelings.

Actually, it's all a heartware issue. I already said at the very start of this thread before the white paper was published that there is no problem physically accommodating a population of 7m in Singapore so long as infrastructure is built ahead of demand. And the govt already said infrastructure will be built ahead of demand.

What happens after the population ponzi scheme reaches 7m? I guess we will have to leave it to the next generation to figure that one out. May they have greater wisdom than us.

Am very surprised.

PR status needs to be renewed. I know of PRs whose status are not renewed, even though they are professionals heading departments and they have been here for a long time with family and assets here.

I know of professionals whose PR application were approved some time after they married locals. Prior to that, their repeated applications had been rejected.

I know of a PR whose status was not renewed despite being the owner of a company employing scores of people here. What can I say? That particular department works in mysterious ways.

I think one of the 'heartware' issues is that there is a perception that PR and citizenship are not being conferred on the right people.

Well I think it depends on which year the PR application is made. I think during 2006-2008, anybody who applies seem to get it. My hubby's colleague was invited to come to SG to work by Edb in some dunno what talent scheme for his industry. And he was sent the PR application form within the 1st week that he arrived in SG. It's only when complaints started and after the GE 2011 that they cut down drastically

One of our taiwanese friends got her PR few months after her arrival. She said her agent in Taiwan will handle all everything concerning Singapore Immigrations. She paid SIN$10,000.00 to get whole family PR status thru this Taiwanese agent.

She came her, few mths later, bought HDB 4 room flat. Few months later she rent a master-bed room in condo. Rent out her 4-rm flat. She is a study-mama, husband doing china business.

Well, I sure hope they take the next fews to review and weed out some of these nonsense PR granted in 2006-2011 when they come up for renewal. The problem I fear is that they will send home the good ones that are beneficial to Singapore too. We all know how the civil service works. :mad:
