Am I being unreasonable if I demand that the school should, in PSLE year, to let us parents know the breakdown of marks scored in Paper 1 EL and MT? My school keeps a policy of secrecy in not telling us parents how our kids fare in their Oral, Listening n Compo. It’s fine if they are at P1 to P5 level. But when it comes to PSLE, and Paper 1 carries lots weightage nowadays, wouldn’t it be fair for us to know so that we can improve on their area of weakness?

May I know what is your school practice? Tell or no tell?

No, you are not unreasonable. Bcos I also wanted to know breakdown since it is crucial year...PSLE. Parents have every reason and right to know so as to improve on the weak areas. My son saw his paper 1 composition marks...but wasn't allowed to bring paper home. Oral marks for english and chinese were kept a secret. Do not understand why some schools keep the marked papers when it is not their sole property.

Agree totally that schools shd not hide breakdown of English papers. DS school refused to reveal breakdown to us too. We need to know where are the weak areas and help the child to improve on these areas.

I spoke to the Eng HOD but she insisted that it is school policy.

teacher didn't give a breakdown of marks...but most of the marks are revealed...so after deducting total, more or less you know. Paper 1 & LC will not be returned, but kids get to see the results in class.

My school did not reveal oral and compo marks. And the children did not get the chance to see their compo as well. But they gave us a range (marks) during PTM. It is very hard to judge where and how the child loses marks in paper 1. A small change here is really necessary. At least the teacher can go thro' the common mistakes each child did and can explain how it can be improved, etc...

I don’t think it is unreasonable at all because my son’s school even puts it in the report book every year. It shows the breakdown of oral components, reading, LC, and conversation as well as composition even!

                So, do fight for it!

Opps just looked at the component marks for English and MT:

They are Paper 1, Paper 2, Listening and Oral. No further breakdown into reading etc. However, the teacher did give me a rough idea during PTC.
Which gives a good idea of where your child’s weaknesses lie.

                    Hi,

For those whose DC has other enrichment e.g. music, swimming etc, roughly when will you all stop these enrichment classes? Will you stop music lessons totally, continue to attend but with minimal practise or just reduce the frequency (e.g. 2x/wk instead of 4x/wk)?

I will still let ds continue his sports n music. Just that no music exams this year till after psle. But he will still hv to practice everyday if possible, if not, will be back to square one.

doing his weekly sports is also a form of break for him.
