I Can Read - Discussion

Hi fellow KSparents,
Anyone has any comments about the CCK Centre branch? We just moved to BP recently and wish to enroll our 4 year old. Referrals to enjoy the discounts mutually will be great too!
TIA! -
micollh:
can we choose teacher or they assign? DD going for their assessment mid jan. Linda from rivervale branch is friendly thru the phone.
Teachers r already assigned to teach a particular class/time slot. So it depends on the day/time slot that your child is enrolled into. HTH -
hi all,
my Dd is in ICR and is 5yo.
She came back with lots of spelling on words that she never knew. She said teacher did not go thru with her. then we realised that there are pages that marked as homework and some completed by the teacher. Realised the completed are the small and easy ones but the other 2 is tough.
so question is, is that normal for K1 classes? They just read aloud there and teacher give spelling test every lesson?
If thats the case then what for I pay and in the end I got to teach? -
Hi,
In the ICR programme, the main objective is to teach the children how to read by decoding and use of long and short vowels. From parent standpoint, we need to go through with the children also.
Initially, I only ensure my child know about the decode but as it progress, I realised that we need to enforce them to revise and learn else they will forget.
As for spelling, I am not sure how the teacher practise in other centre, for my child, the teacher who taught them are more concern about them to read so his expectation for the spelling is not high in the sense. But he also expect us to revise basic fundamentals with the child at home. -
Hi,
this is kind of a shock to us. meaning that cos we dun have enuff time, thats why we send them to such centres.
revising at home is welcome but not the volume of it. My DD goes to berries as well but i dun see that volume of revision as per icr.
They teach the vowels, then tats it. 2 out of 3 stories will be for revision. they also teach/go thru 1 of the story and then spelling test.
still a shock to us.
also, the admin and teacher are not very tactful or customer service oriented. the tone they used is as if we owe them anything.
maybe I should complain all the way till Aus. -
I am just sharing of my experience in the way as it really work for my child. Yes, as a parent, we do not have enough time to teach and therefore send the children for classes. However, in the end, we will still like to see the children achieve skill that is worth the money we spend. Initially, I leave my child to study but in the end, it do not have any result, therefore, I will need to spend a bit of time to get her to revise her work and it work well on her due to her learning ability might be slow.
For any programme we sent them to, ultimately most of the teacher will mention that student will still need to go home and revise the work learn else in the end of programme, they might not be have learn anything.
This is based on my experience and it do not mean other parents might be doing as well as every centre’s teacher might work differently.
I really appreciate for this teacher as he has the passion wanted the child to pick up the skills to read. There are also student dropped out from the class as they found it too hectic. -
hi monstermummy,
so ur child is having the same volume of revision when he/she is in ICR K1?
Like is it a norm for them to teach vowels, go home and learn the other 2 stories and spellings for the next lesson?
anyone else have the same situation for K1 class? I want to find out is that the norm or is it something else. -
Hi,
She started the ICR programme at the age of K1, therefore, it might be some difficulties for them. I ever heard from her teacher got child who started at the N2 level as well. I believed that their programme model applied same throughout to all centres although is the franchise.
Therefore, it is really a torture for child as well especially at this age to read and have to face the spelling at the following week. But once they get it started, progressively you will see them progress well.
As for spelling, I have not concentrated much since her teacher also let us know via parent meeting session, he don’t really particular about the score for the spelling as he need to see the effort children put in to pick up the skill in phonics. Normally in their class, the teacher also get them to read out. This is my understanding from the teacher meeting parent session for the whole year programme. -

is ur parent teacher meeting during the first lesson or the end?
so in ur case, handling 2 stories and a bunch of words for spelling weekly is ok for ur child and u?
mine started since N1 with teacher cindy. no issue. until now in K1 its like chaotic.
anyone else have this issue with ICR? -
SBKS:
My son was almost same age as your daughter when he started ICR programme. He is currently in book 5. Initially when I practised whole chunk of spelling words with him (first lesson were about 60 words right?), I was very stressed too. Subsequently I have learnt to take it easy. Especially when he has gained more advanced phonics skill. We took 15mins or lesser each session, depends on how many words to cover, for 2 consecutive nights to practise for following day test. As for reading the passages assigned, my son is coping well so far, very minimal coaching is needed. I only help to explain the meaning for vocabs he doesn't know.Monster Mummy:
