I sat for my Higher Chinese test today, we were only given 1 hour, time was also cut as we only have 2 periods, it was right after recess as well. After waiting for everyone to come into class ( banded ), teacher to give instructions and give out the paper, we only have less than 45 minutes left. The questions were very hard, most of the open-ended compre. questions were worth at least 6 marks.


I did not manage to complete the paper, and left quite a number of questions blank. Despite speaking Chinese at home since birth and doing above average for Chinese in Primary school, I feel the jump in difficulty is really big.

It was a very stressful experience - even worse than PSLE, so bad that I cried right after handing in the paper.

Did you take HCL in primary school? It will be tough if you don't. But you are not the only one. My boy did not take HCL in primary school & he is doing it in Sec 1. If most of your classmates face the same problem, then you should be alright. If it is due to insufficient time given & it is a killer paper, then everyone in the class should be in the same situation.

Don't be too hard on yourself. After it is only the beginning of Sec 1 & it is your first HCL paper. Just like P5 CA 1. Most kids' grade dropped due to a big jump in standard & then everyone start to pick up in SA 1. It is going to be the same in Sec 1. Just work hard & things will get better.

Don't be too discouraged. Just try your best and review how you are coping half-a-year or 1-year down the road. Perhaps, your school is setting a very high standard to ensure all of you are well-prepared?

If you really cannot cope, then maybe you need to revaluate with your teacher and parents whether to drop HCL or not, so that you can spend more time on your other subjects and excel in them.

In my DS school, they must score 60% and above during their year-end exam or else they will be asked to drop the subject.

Thank you for all the encouragement. I took HCL in Primary school. I need the subject for deduction points in O levels though, but my teacher said that since our school has too many people taking HMT, they will need to remove the weaker students from HMT. I will work harder and see how I do in the mid year exams. ^^

Trust me, you will keep seeing yourself failing tests and tests until you are immune to all the failings ! Just make sure you do your homework, do all the revisions, things will not be as bad as you think .

Is it common to fail tests in secondary school nowadays ? I don't mean higher chinese. I used to only flunkgeography in secondary 4 and physics. The rest all borderlineline passes mostly, or B grade. I have no tuition. Are secondary school standard so high nowadays too? :shock:

Yes, and is not only seen in neighbourhood schools.

My nephews/niece school (6 different schools) will print the highest score, lowest score and median score for the class and cohort in the students report book. You will be amazed that most subjects will have few students failure. Subjects with 100% pass are either due to low number of students (<5) or Aesthetics subjects like Arts, Music .

the expectations are higher...the depth is deeper...so it is not surprising to see more failures. literature is tough. just yesterday, son brought back this english worksheet on visual comprehension and asked me what the tagline in the pic was trying to interpret :faint: told him, 'sorry i can't help you'.

Though there are failures, there are many who will do well too in their tests. I guess we will all have to set our targets according to our DCs’ abilities. The road to education is still a long way to go.

After one big exam last year...I would have thought Sec 1 would be sweet :skeptical: ...but tests 2-3 times a week isn't. The road ahead is very very long...so we need to bond with the kids during their teenage years before their friends become more important than us parents.

My DS hates literature. Gosh! His teacher didn't explain or teach much and the homework although contains only 2 questions but each of these questions need to write an analysis of the content/tone/conflicts of the characters in the passage given. Lots of time require to prepare. Apart from literature, he has group projects, Maths which need to work out/outline the steps to arrive at the questions.... I cannot imagine how to stretch the time once the CCA starts after the CNY.

Time is so tight now…week by week passes so fast.

I lost count of his endless tests…but I do show my concern by asking how is school. Geography is Greek to me…all those plateau thing. Science is about lab stuff at the moment. English homework like visual comprehension last night…'What does the girl with the halo above her head mean? The tagline is ‘some kids go to heaven earlier’. Who is the target audience? 3 questions and I am stumped completely.
