smartmummy:
how many hours of sleep needed for p5 kids?my son sleep 8hrs.now trying to increase to 9hrs.
Mine 8 hours too. Supposed to be in bed by 9pm but they will dilly dally come out to kiss me hug me then kiss again hug again and then my kids will pillow talk to each other in bed so by the time they actually fell asleep will be 10pm or so & need wake up at 6:15am.
I always complain their bedtime regime is way too long, took an hour! -

Any chance to streamline some of her extra activities if she's taking music or other hobbies/CCA?Not sure if parents here share the same experience as myself.
My DD is in p5 this year. Starting school, she already has loads of homework. Initially, she was full of energy to complete her homework. Subsequently, the homework became about 3-4 hours daily and on the very tough OnSponge maths questions, English to find annotations from papers, spelling test on phrases, etc... She starts to get frustrated... As the time goes by.... (and it's only Feb now)... she is starting to slag... Not paying attention in class, completing her homework anyhow... Totally turned off..
Quite worried about her... Spoken to her and she sometimes ok, sometimes not...
Think combination of the stress of work together with puberty coming???
Can any experienced mother with DD share some tips on how to manage this stage?
Mine is heavily loaded with school work & project too. I recently remove dd's music class to make way for more rest time. And opt her out of CCA as she's already staying back in school up to 4 times a week. -

my son get headache and absent to school(once in a week) i think cos of not enough sleep or stress. his eye check-up ok. after came from supplementary,he feel so tired.around 6:30, i bring him to playground and fetch my daughter.8pm we come back from playground.three days a week we go to playground.this three days i cannot give any extra work.he can do his school hw 8-9.dinner then sleep. I don't want him to get headache.
Hi smartmummy,
Apologies for the late reply, I haven't been online. As I mentioned, you must know your child. What works for one child may not work for another. Fortunately this is 2014 PSLE thread so all of you have the P5 year to work out the best rountine for your kids. P5 is really a critical year so do make good use of this year.
Book Titles : any specific subjects/area ? I used many books, mostly from recommendations in various threads.
Book by See Jaik Yong : Number of study hours per day and whether the child can absorb. Again, I feel this is dependant on the child. My ds was able to work quite long hours by P5. We wake up early, go for exercise, shower, have breakfast then start work. In the morning, we always do the more-brain-juice consuming stuff and the oral/memorising stuff we leave it for later in the day. The method of one subject per day works better for my son then switching between subjects every day.
Headaches : I think you are right to be concerned. Headaches could be due to many reasons eg. (a) dehydration - make sure the kid gets lots of fluids, water, soup etc (b) muscular tension - don't stay in one position for too long eg. long hours bent over the desk, working on the computer etc. Go for walks, bike rides or swimming. Practise deep breathing together to relax, give your son light massages on his shoulders, neck, temple etc (c) stress/tension/not enough sleep - possible reasons too.
My son needs about 9-10hrs of sleep but many of his classmates survived on <8hrs and still did very well in all aspects of life.
Maths Paper 2 : My son did write short statements of workings, especially for the long questions (last 5 yo 6 questions). Sometimes he gets method mark (1 or 2 marks) even if final answer is incorrect.
P5 mommies, at that stage I felt like we were preparing for war  but persevere and pace you and your child. After the final battle, you can look back with no regrets :salute:
All the best to you all and hope my 2cents worth is of some help. -

May I know what time u wake-up and is it in the school days or in the holidays?
How about computer time on weekends?Sometimes I feel to dump the computer.Previously weekdays also allowed. Now stricktly on weekends only.He seemed to be distracted and irritated.Whenever I asked him to do the correction he show his irritation and no patience to listen. After using the computer he feel so tired to study.Whenever I explain,he has no patience to listen and he talk too much.I try to be more patience to handle but I couldn't be calm for too long. -
Dehydration is a very common cause. Since your boy is spending long hours in school, ensure he has enough fluids and see if the headaches go away.
You mean what time I wake my son up ? Last year, on weekends and school holidays : in bed by 9pm, up 7.15am, exercise 7.30-8am, start work 8.30am.
P5 and P6, no computer gaming at all. Only use computer to check homework. Computer gaming only after PSLE.
You try to work in sufficient rest and reduce the computer time, see if his irritation reduces. On weekend do some fun stuff as a family to help you and him to relax eg. bike ride or go for nice meal together. -

Did ur son go to Maths,Science tutition or entrichment? -
Boil his favourite soups, put in thermos flasks and let him sip all day especially on weekends. That’s I did for my boy as he is very "heaty" kind and needs a lot of fluids.
Tuition : My had had no tuition except Chinese.
You are most welcome. Wish you all the best in you and your son’s PSLE journey! -

He started to refuse to learn his spelling and does his homework. Came home just lay down and started going off to his 'dream land'. He can basically lay for hours and hours refusing to get up till he needed to pee.
He is now definitely an unhappy child.
He gave up before the battle starts..... :frustrated:
