Your maid is probably entitled to not doing any work at all on her off-day. However, like you have pointed out, the attitude can be such a big turn off, right? Mine sweeps the floor an tidies up the bedrooms before going out. If she sees dishes in the sink, she will wash it before going to bed. However, she is very precise about when she wants her off-days.... even when the kids are sick or my hubby traveling, she won't change anything.

Weekends are my off-days, too... but I spent it doing a report for my boss for his meeting this morning!
Yup, we frequently work after office hours and on our off days / weekends too!

Really MUST discuss with my kids (away from prying maid's ears) that this type of calculating behavior is wrong. Yes, the attitude is such a turn-off!

My God, so scary! Imagine we leave our little ones with them during the day!!
On coming back from her day off, my maid commented that Geylang was so crowded, more crowded than usual cos many new maids were there too.

My friend's maid tested positive for HIV after working for her for almost 4 years. Whole family had to be tested. Fortunately, tests for family was negative. After that, her maids use a different set of cutlery, cups, etc.

Police should conduct more raids on Sundays in Geylang to deter the maids from going there.
Er, my maid wasn't referring to THAT part of Geylang. Geylang doesn't consist of just the red-light area.

My maid (with me for 5+ years now) will prepare breakfast, ensure all of us eat and then shower one of my 2 boys before she bath and make-up to go for her off. We don’t expect her to do any chores like sweeping, mopping and cooking during the weekends because it is family time and we usually will all go out with the kids. Except for the twice-weekly laundry that she has to do every Saturday. I once saw a big pile of laundry not yet washed and she just goes out and I had to do for her. Told her off about it and told her to ensure she finish the laundry before her off day and don’t expect me to wash the laundry for her on her off day. No problems after that.

After she comes back, she will finish whatever chores I was not able to finish like washing dishes or throwing garbage bags out.

Desert wind, u are lucky. I don’t know how long I can take it. My indo maid is not meeting my expectations. She is 4 years experienced in spore before she join me. The following are thing she can’t do.

              1. She don’t really know how to cook. Everyone hates her cooking. Told her to read cook books but she can’t be bothered.
              2. Whole day only mop floor and wash toilet. Then prepare dinner and its bedtime. Wash clothes using machines except for floor mat or my working clothes.
              3. She don’t really talk to my girl except ask her to eat. So no bond, my girl really dislike her a lot.
              4. No initiative. Clean only when she is told to.
              5. She’s very slow in her work. Cook soup and vegetables only need 2 and half hour. Because she is slow, I have to help her with household chores if not dinner time will be 10pm!!!

I become more busy with household chores after she came. The only good point is she don’t show black face and not the type to bring man back. But I m not sure after having off every Sunday will she change?

On her offday, she only need to get herself ready to go out. We don’t need her to make breakfast or care for my gal. My gal is already 9. She asked $500 salary because of her 4 years experience. I told her employers must be nuts to pay you $500. Because she can’t really cook, don’t know how to take care of children, no initiative in doing housework, pick only certain food to eat. Tell me in this forum who will want to pay her $500??

Forgot to add, when u talk to her she just won’t answer u. It feels like you are talking to a wall. When I raised my voice then she will reply. I told I try the same on her. Whenever she talks to me I also will become a wall and see how she feels!

Despite all these still keeping her because its damn hard to find a maid now!! Don’t know whether Cambodia maid can make it or not.

Save your heartache. There is just no chemistry. It is going to be difficult living with such a person, even so when it is your domestic helper, under your roof. Look for a better person to help you.

OMG... My Phil maid sounds like your maid. Talking to her is like talking to wall. When I raise my voice, she'll answer she knows and sound like I'm nagging her. She likes to call me from kitchen for me to check eg how she cut vegetable. Initially, I went to kitchen, like being summoned. Asked her to write notes ( gave her new notebook ) so that she can refer which dish - how to cut. Says she can remember. After 6 months, still have to check. Now, I pretend not to hear when she calls. If she calls louder, I ask her to bring and show me.

She'll excuse herself from kitchen when I'm cooking. She'll say lots of other work to do. So she has no intention to learn cooking. Frankly, I think it's her loss cos cooking is a skill that can command a higher pay as a maid.

She was very slow when she first came. Then after 2 months, she was ok, can complete all work plus ironing for the week. I praised her. My mistake. After that, slow again and could not finish ironing. Every week, left a bit of laundry for ironing. Even on days that I didn't cook, laundry still stacking. Still retired to her room at 9 or 9 plus, made no effort to catch up. After a few weeks, she had gall to tell me laundry baskets for ironing full, like where should she put clothes? Told her she's first maid that cannot complete ironing for the week.

After having her, I end up doing so much more household chores. When I ask her to be faster, she complains so much work. Tell her about landed houses, pets, babies and elderly, mine only hdb. Then tell her if she does less, I don't need a maid. Maybe part-time helper will do. Still very slow.

Her saving grace is she don't show me black face ( yet ) and quality is good... most of time. She knows how to operate most appliances.

Will still keep her cos can still tolerate. Her pay ( set by agent ) is lower than market. As long as she does not ask for increment or more off days, or give other issues, I think I will tolerate and keep her. Increment will be impossible, now that she has turned DH off with her \"I won't lift a finger on my off day\" attitude. The next maid could be worse than her....

Am considering part-time helper now that kids are older. Has anyone faced problems with part-time helpers?
