i think speaking to kids in maindrain helps alot. u can also let him go for some lessons . At this age should start .

My soon-to-be 3yr old son doesn't seem to have an interest in learning chinese. We speak mainly english back home with only his grandma speaking chinese.

What are the tested and proven ways that you parents have used in teaching your kids Chinese.

I think 3 years old is too young to attend a Chinese course, you can buy some interesting books, or you buy a speaking Chinese toy, the toy can answer many Chinese questions, can make dialogue with your child. My daughter 3 years old, but we are from china, my daughter born in singapore, she speak English very well with other children, and come bk home can speak standard Chinese with us, every morning we play the Chinese cd , eg, dizi GUI, lun yu, and we can read tang Shi and song ci for her, she also can follow to read without book. I am looking to learn Chinese for business reasons and I am a non Chinese speaker, living in the UK. Next month I start a new job commuting to the City of London. With a train journey of one hour each way, I am guessing CD/online may be the best way to learn.

Does anyone know of good CD/online sites.

We will be returning to Singapore later this year, and my younger daughter will be entering Sec 2. She has been in an international school for many years, so although she takes Chinese as her ‘foreign language’, it’s not of a very high standard (at a guess, maybe P3-4). I could get her exempted, but would prefer not to. Teaching her myself while overseas is not really an option as my Chinese is not great, and anyway, we are now too busy with winding up here, packing and other logistics, so I’m thinking of getting her to do some kind of accelerated learning when we get back in July. Does anyone have any tips on how to improve Chinese rapidly at lower sec level? Would any enrichment centre programme be suitable? She doesn’t want private tuition as she likes company. Any comments or suggestions would be welcome! Thanks.

and then once you are back, get her on 1-1 chinese tuition to get back on track, short term basis. I don't think enrichment centre can do the magic of improving Chinese rapidly.

Thanks for the advice. I also think that one-to-one would be better for catching up. As you say, maybe she can do it for the initial period and join a class once she’s caught up. Any idea what tutors charge for Sec 2 level?
