My DD also did better in HCL than CL. 🤷

Dd had \"practice papers\" for HCL and CL in school (No CA officially) and she did better in HCL than CL too. :slapshead: Given that CL is the one that is used for computation of t-score, it's kind of worrying.

But I'm curious n puzzled by the various comment that some kiddos does better in HCL than CL. I was told HCL papers has 2 comprehension with at least 3 questions each that require the child to comment/critique in their own words. This part like very hard to score leh :?
          Pardon my being kaypo
:congrats: to all who did well.

yes, the writing of own words are very challenging. It takes some maturity to tackle those questions.

Back when she was in primary school, DD1 (now in Sec 1) used to do better in HCL too. I, too, was puzzled. DD2 (now in P5) does better in HCL for the č€ƒåÆŸs, but for the recent CA1, did better for CL. But I think her class in general actually scored better for HCL than CL in the recent CA1.

DD2 tends to lose marks in the 4 marks comprehension questions. Always gives incomplete answers.... :slapshead:

Could be in HCL, teachers tend to mark leniently because in some schools only 1 or 2 classes of HCL.

Whereas the normal CL, the whole cohort is doing, teachers tend to mark strict, using PSLE marking standard.

Ditto for my dd n many of her classmates as well. However, I have yet to find out the reason behind it. Besides lenient marking, perhaps the teachers drilled more on the HCL way of answering, instead of CL way of answering?

Anyway, my fren, whose dd is already in sec 2, told me this is very common in her gal's time too...

If the marking rubics is similar, shouldn't the teachers teach the same 'way of answering', be it CL or HCL? Are the CL students missing out on something here? I always thought the difference btw the 2 is that HCL is more ''cheem' n therefore requires more 'powerful' mandarin 功夫 to ꎄꋛ šŸ˜†

I have heard that both subjects emphasise on different aspects of the lang but nvr bothered to find out the differences...

Frankly, I myself am pretty lousy in CL, so I just let my dd self-study most of the time. This time round, I did help go through her 笔记 with her the day b4 the pprs. I gave her the word/phrase, she'll try to remember how to write it, the hypy n é€ å„ć€‚ Then I went thru the 同音n 同型字 as well as 反义čƍ of these words. However, my dd will tell me she doesn't need this part for 1 ppr or tht part for the other... so maybe the differences are those? Perhaps if your child can tell you the differences, it can be of some help to him/her too?

Anyway, our target for her CL is pretty low, so she did well in our eyes. I looked through her pprs & HCL does have 'cheemer' words generally & very complicated answers for compre...

Not sure this helps or not...

Ano thing abt my dd's CL lessons, they are very intensive n she has MOUNTAINS of hw (ä¹ å—ļ¼Œē¬”č®°ļ¼Œē»ƒä¹ ļ¼Œå¬å†™ n 记一记 r ultra difficult) everyday for just this one lang. The teacher really drills them & gives all kinda 成语谚语 and sayings during lessons, whether they understand or not. She'll come home & ask me abt them, so we gotta check dictionary or google abt them. This is the only subj which they hv to stay back once a week to continue the lesson! Very siong... :faint:

I don't have her papers with me, but it is the comprehension part that dd did badly for CL.

For HCL - yes, the words are more cheem, she complains that she don't really know how to read some of them but somehow she managed to guess the meanings from the context and was still able to give acceptable answers.

For CL, the passage is simpler but the questions were not as direct, esp the last passage. Personally, as far as this \"practice paper\" is concerned, I think it is true that her teacher marked more strictly for CL than HCL, probably following closely to some \"answer keys\". She gets zero marks for a few comprehension questions for CL whereas for HCL, she gets at least partial marks for all the questions. :scratchhead:
