Over 90% of fresh grads from 2012 cohort employed
-
is this something to cheer about?
9% or almost one out of every ten 2012 graduate are still jobless
and 5.4% had only managed to secure contract work -

Think compared to other countries, we are considered good liao. So let's be contented and with relentless pursuit to better each citizen's, more can be achieved :rahrah: -
Those not employed could be furthering their studies, or seeing the world before they start working.

What about those from private uni?

I think we also have to look at things from the broader perspective. If the 9% is really true unemployment (i.e. minus those waiting for further studies, intentionally want to idle type), then I would say it’s a worrying sign. Because 9% is significantly higher than the 2-3% national unemployment rate. A lot of countries such as south korea, US and Spain have a disporportionately high % of young people unemployment, or underemployment (e.g. graduate employed as cashier). This has caused a lot of tension and social issues.
I am sure we are not there yet, but we have to be watchful and make sure we don’t end up there, and end up with a lost generation. Recently I saw on the news that Acting Minister Tan Chuan Jin acknowledged the problem that I have highlighted and was brushed off by some forummers here previously. That is companies recruiting foreigners with experience rather than hiring local fresh graduates for some sectors, which will have serious repercussions later on as we would have a lack of experienced locals a few years later.
I am happy that the Minister is aware of this and I hope that actual actions can be taken to address this soon before we end up in the same situation as some other countries.
So yes, this is a stats that everyone should be watching closely. -
