A strongly worded post invites a strongly worded response. :evil:Why am I not surprised that there would be a response couched in that tone?
We are all concern about our kids, that's understandable. You have to be prepared for your DD to be fully immersed in a culture geared towards cultivating engineers with an entrepreneurial mindset.
A person who will have to crack his brain and roll up his sleeves. No future doctor, lawyer or banker considerations (could be but ...), is that what you want for your child? :?
I wouldn't choose SST for my younger child as he is totally different from his elder brother. So I would say the character of the child is important.
I also understand that kids may be too young to be so geared towards such a specialised school, so, I would trust my son's young mind to decide for himself. After all, he has done quite well so far and like your daughter he said that he felt \"at home\" in SST with like minded individuals during the selection activity.
Cheers mate! -
Btw ds applied for sst on his own. Filled out the online forms on his own. He only asked me to make payment.
-
Just to share my perspective.
Have told my DD not to be overly excited about the CO from SST and to decide only after the trial session in Oct. But I am going to support my dd’s decision if she decides to accept it.
Not because I want her to become an engineer. But because I have all the while felt that our mainstream education system was just too theoretical in nature and does not prepare our young enough to be naturally able to apply themselves to situations in the real world. So, the applied learning approach of SST appeals to me.
As for emphasis of curriculum towards engineering, I am again drawn to it for a different reason. The world is just so connected now and it will only get more knowledge-based as more economies develop. So, the emergence of new technologies in some part of the world will have an effect on us eventually, with ever increasing speed because of this interconnectivity of economies.
Hence, the earlier my child’s foundation is built to understand and appreciate such technologies, the better prepared they will be to capitalise on it in whatever careers they may end up in in the future. Indeed, I was relieved when the PM made a similar remark during his National Day rally, something along this line. It kind of gave me confidence that what I was thinking of made sense …
As to the issue of whether SST will be able to provide a rounded education, in terms of character building, I personally feel we as parents have a greater role in this than the school. Having to spend so much time in school, it will be the students who will dictate the “norm of their society”. No man is an island and we all live by the rules of the society we are in. So, if the majority of parents of the cohort are reasonable, their offsprings should be as well since “monkey see, monkey do!” The school can only guide with their various programmes and activities in this area.
Just my 2 cents worth. -
I attended the session for the Parents meeting and my DS trial class today.
It was a disturbing day at the Parents’ Q&A session. I realised that it isn’t the government that is pressurizing our kids but it is the parents that are doing the “good job”.
I have a very good overall impression of the school, the VP and the Principal.
I realised that a lot of parents are not interested in having the best interest of their children at heart but rather the “pride” of the COP scores of a school.
I believe some parents believe that their kids wearing the “branded” badge is akin to them wearing it themselves. Unless a parent is an Alumni, I wonder if the pressure to put the kid to a “branded” school is some sort narcissistic adventure. -
Does anyone have the email to the principal or VP?

Hi,
Is there any parent here whose child got into SST via appeal post PSLE results?
Or anyone who has heard of such cases?
My DS passed the 1st round of DSA interview but didn’t for the 2nd round. Now with PSLE result at 240+, I am wondering if he stands a chance via the appeal route?
Any advice on how to go about doing it?
Thanks alot for any advice. -

School of science and technology seems be a well equipped school providing various opportunities to students to experience and learn before deciding to get enrolled in a polytechnic or junior college. Is it a rather considered to be a well’good’ school? My son will be the 4th batch on 2013 and he scored a fair score of 246 for psle where he is stuck in the midst of average and high schools.
-
246 can go Victoria school? I don’t really think its very safe to go to new schools because the first few batches of students tend to be the ‘guinea pigs’ and thus the teaching methods etc may not have been properly implemented yet.

Hi, any feedback/ update from the parents of SST students?
ds is interested to try DSA for this school but this school is too far from our place and have to do O’ levels.
How are the students doing so far? The first batch of Students taking O’level is next year right? -

But I heard the school in dire need to buck up. Seemed like many of them ill-prepared for the exam. My wife's colleague has a daugther there. Her report book, in the words of her mother \"a sea of red\".
Heard also many problems in the school from other sources. A blessing in disguise my DS did not manage to get in via DSA last year. -
Oh dear, I prefer an IP school too, will talk to him abt this.
Thks for the update! -

Also heard the V Principal also left end of last year due to the situation. Not sure whether this is true. -

This may be true. They are very hands on in their approach.
But academically, it seems their students are not very well-prepared. Heard that they have may temporary teachers seconded from MOE, which further exacerbate their problems.
My wife's colleague said when she went for her daughter's meet-the-teacher session last year, she was told that IF her daughter worked hard, MAYBE can get into St Andrew's JC......that is a big IF and MAYBE.
Also, every students there uses a laptop (compulsory). My wife colleague said she and her husband don't know whether she is doing homework or play computer games or in social media.
This is giving them a big headache.
I am not saying all students are like that, but the potential problem is there, especially when the school wants to be so tech-savvy and homework, etc given via online. -
kwcllf:
This is nothing new in schools these days. My elder Sec 4 boy from an IP school (not premier school, hor) has lots of projects, and lots of his project discussions are on Online Messaging, they do research online, and his Whatsapp Message discussion groups are blinking furiously by the second! I wonder now if he regrets switching to the hand-me-down iPhone from his dad recently (before that, he was using \"Not-Smart\" Phone... the last one still doing so among his friends *hehe*). Oh, and teachers send them emails, and even gives comments on their essays, etc in their emails, reports, etc, and assignments are given on the school's online portal.

For my younger Sec 2 boy (in an O-level school), lots of their notes and assignments are given on the school's online portal. There's no textbooks for Math. Again, the whole package for the Math Curriculum is purchased by us, and made available online.
Yeah, so it's hard to say when they are doing personal stuff and when they are doing schoolwork. Very hard to draw the line too. I mean, if you are discussing your projects on FB messaging and sending files(powerpoint slides, posters, word documents, xcel files, etc, etc) while working live on the files while discussing via Emails and whatever other method - as long as it's online , it's likely they also mix social messaging amongst all that!
I think it's so stressful to be kids these days. They really have to be so good at multi-tasking! If not, message OVERLOAD! -

My son is in sst first year and he is enjoying his time there. I don't see how a child with red marks is the school's fault.

Their tests are tough, and they also cover o levels questions in year one.
Why need to buck up? What measures r u using? -

The vp is still the same. My son now wants to be an engineer and has his sights on NTU.
They do spot checks on their laptops, has good relationship with parents.
Maybe your wife friend doesn't want you or your wife to feel dejected. Parents are kiasu, they won't want to tell u good stuff.
I won't say much here, but I have only good things to say about sst. -

I beleived any schools using computers for lessons alot will have some measures in place to monitor abuse. But there is so much a school can do.
Also, by the way, my wife and I don't feel dejected AT ALL, especially after hearing all the negative things. If you don't feel this way, all the best to you.
Oh Yes, if any students don't do well, it may or may not be the fault of the school. But when I heard from my wife's colleague that many of them had failed, and badly, not just my wife's colleague's daugther, then there should be a cause for concern.
Since your DS is not in the same cohort, that doesn't mean the problems are/were not there. And perhaps, after the debacle, they have wised up....and that can only be good for your DS or all other students attending that school.
