If the school is using web based application, then the make of laptop or pc doesnt matter. If the school is adopting a full integrated e-learning eco system, then it will have to decide on 1 platform, be it window-based, mac, ipad or android. It will be too expensive to build a infrastructure to support all forms.

Even if it is pc, it also does mean the it is auto compatible and version dependence…

What happens if in every cohort we've 2 strong-headed parents, one believing that Mac is better, the other windows is better. How is the sch going to appease both of them? Sometimes we have to understand the difficulties faced by the other party as well.
fqw, can u elaborate on the above? I don't quite get your point. :?

The school materials are built around that platform. If you have such strong feeling regards as to which platform are used, then dont go to that school lor...
I am perfectly fine with A secondary school asking me to get a laptop for my son if he is in secondary school (because I am quite sure he is not going to get one of his own at that age). And I am not fazed by it anymore, especially after hearing how a primary school is asking their primary one cohort to get an iPad. All primary one student, one each.

While not all schools are like this, how would a parent know which school won't be like this for as long as the kid is enrolled in there? Boh bao eh mah...

Our son is still in primary school so we have not experienced this. If we are faced with the problem, the issue is not about whether we can afford it or not (we can afford it) but the issue is about given a choice what kind of laptop we want to have. I don't like it when I am forced to buy something that I don't like. We have both Mac and Windows based laptops at home so I have used both of them. I don't understand why some people consider Mac is better than Windows based laptop. Why is the school forcing the students to buy Mac? If my son is forced like that, I will definitely complain to MOE.
just like scifi calculators, the schools will advise which model is suitable for exam. One can choose to use another type of cos. But if Kenna caught using a disqualified model or if the one in use does not come with certain function needed for the exam, that too bad lor. It's a calculated move mah.

My niece and nephew's school did not specify it is compulsory to buy. So there is a choice not to buy. But those without won't have assess to certain materials lor. I am not sure if those without the laptop can do work in the school comp lab though.

Primary school need ipad? Can share which school?

For sec schools, usually they will start from new intake.... Like sji start with their year one this year.....

There are also schools which stopped the program after trial runs, like chs..

What I was trying to say is that it's difficult for sch to propose a solution that fits everyone's (parents') preference.

Why must it be otherwise? Anyway both vendors are appointed by moe... You can send in your view to cpib... They have the obligation to investigate any complaint....

My niece and nephew were told to buy a laptop each some time back. The school got a good deal for the students but it is still a good $700+ per laptop. My bro said those families who couldn't afford could apply for further subsidy from the school. There is also instalment schemes in place. In short, the school ask u to buy but they will try their best to help u.

There is a reason why the school use MacBooks. It is not about it being glam. You must understand that Windows OS runs on so many brands of hardwares. It is very tough for an IT dept to help maintain the school intranet with so many students laptop of so many brands. Also there is a lot of bloat in the Windows OS, also many virus and security problems. The Mac is more user friendly and stable and that's the price you pay for.

As for cost, there are ways to get aid via the school to purchase the laptop.

I am not from the school authority. I use both Windows and Mac OS. I just want say something fair and objective for the school.
