I really can’t stand tutors who cancel the lessons last minute. Some of them are simply not committed to their lessons. Yesterday, my student’s mum asked me if it’s possible for me to take over from the science tutor as she is planning to fire the tutor.

The tutor has not been teaching process skills (structured Qns) for paper 2. Every lesson she just simply flip to a page and ask the student to do. If the student asks her, she just checks the answer sheet. I was totally speechless when she told me that.
I told her to tolerate this tutor until she can get another one but then again to get another one is not hard. It’s the matter whether the tutor is skillful or not and committed or not. Many claim to be tutors but they keep changing students after few months. Speaks volumes of them. You can choose not to agree.

I have heard too many horror stories from my friend who is a tuition agent. Sigh!

        sleepy:

changed to group tuition at tuition center? won't cancel lessons last minute
there will be a relief teacher if usual teacher can't make it although that should not happen too often
We only engage private tutor for english for my ds. In the past, he went to Lcentral but quit after a yr coz their tutors kept changing.

This is the 2nd private tutor we engage. We engaged her thru Schtutor.com, as recommended by some parents here. My ds said he is tired of joining group tuition(coz he is currently joining group tuitions for chinese).

I really don't what to do...

If they inform you in the morning, I think it's reasonable provided its not often. If every month same issue then I think it's questionable. If its once in a while, I think just let it go.

An hour before, all I have to say is, it's a load of rubbish. I thought that school tutors only provides school teachers? Why you have one who is still studying? Upgrading?

Some of the tuition centers they change tutors because their tutors quit. Most of the time tutors quit when we are unfairly treated and some centers do not pay their tutors well. Sad truth.

Some kids are beyond control when they attend tuition. I have several bad experiences.

For my case, being a tutor for 1-1, I do encounter parents changing of their kids' lessons during the last hr. Either tell me that family has a dinner to attend which she had forgotten to inform me earlier or kids are too tired after coming back from school, request to change lessons to another day. (there was once, I came to realise that this mummy was using \"child was sick\" as an excuse).
Probably, they know that I do replace a lesson should the child misses one, taking advantage of my kindness, think it's time for me to review this condition with some parents. (But there are also some reasonable, kind parents who tell me no need to schedule a replacement lesson becos it is their fault for not able to attend the lesson).

                  Funz:
Just told DD to plan her revision schedule for SA1.

She came up with complete homework, and alternate days, 1 hour math plus 30mins english, 1 hour science plus 30mins chinese.

I told her ehhhh, I dun have that many sets of practise papers for her. So in the end, we decided that she will revisit all the past worksheets that she has done and do them again.
This is a good practice. When I do revision with my students, I will like them to redo the past worksheets which I had given them, on top of New Revision worksheets.
I will collect back the past worksheets so that when they redo them again at home, they cannot just copy the answers from the past worksheets. (All kids know this trick, haha). It's pointless to keep doing new worksheets where they cannot remember what are the mistakes they had made previously. It's important to learn from mistakes and NOT to repeat them.

I do not see this as kindness. It just shows them your availability and your willingness to accomodate. My students know never to ruffle with my feathers. I adhere to a strict schedule. Any cancellation is to their own loss. My lessons are back to back everyday. I rarely do any makeup lesson (there will only be makeup lesson if I'm sick and I can't make it).

In the first place, there are no available slots. Tuesday is my only off day and it's meant for rest and family. Only the month before exams I open Tuesdays up for students to reserve slots for additional lessons. My students and their parents are fully aware of that and they will tell me way in advance. Like once they get their exam schedule, they book my Tuesday slots (first come first serve).
                    Run your rules well.
So far I have no issues with the parents or students. They give me valid reasons like school trips or competitions etc.

                    Good luck!

I use my rest day for the makeup lessons. I also do not take up to my maximum capacity as I still need my \"Me Time\" and time for my family.
BTW, I already dropped one of the students who postponed or cancelled lessons too often.
