      Maths Hub:
      Hi all,

Here is the next installment for the Maths Olympiad Challenge! Looking forward to your participation! :rahrah:

A samurai wants to test his sword’s sharpness by using a rope. He took the rope and the rope is folded in half, then in half again, then in half yet again. Then he took his sword and cut the rope in a swift cut across all layers. What is the length of the rope if one of the pieces obtained has length of 150 centimeters and another has length 70 centimeters? (Show all cases)
Here is the answer to the question!
Cutting the rope into pieces we obtained three different types of pieces (see Fig.)
      http://i50.tinypic.com/acpx7o.jpg\">
The length of one of the types is exactly twice as much than the other. We denote these lengths: x, 2x and y, respectively, and the length of the whole rope by L. By counting the number of pieces of each type, we see that L = 8x + 4y = 4(2x + y). All possible cases
are presented in the table below, with a and b as the 2 given lengths of two of the pieces::
      http://i45.tinypic.com/20ro6s8.jpg\">

      There are 3 different result:
      8a+4b=8*150+4*70=1480cm
      8b+4a=8*70+4*150=1160cm
      4a+4b=4*150+4*70=880cm

Looking forward to your participation in the next challenge! :rahrah:

          Hi

SMOPS is on 6th april morning and it happens to be the last lesson of my son’s SMOPS training in maths arena. Wonder can i shift the session to March holiday? since it will be over so see no point to attend the last lesson on that day.

I emailed to the centre but no reply…

We were with Maths Hub @ Bt Batok for a very brief period. One aspect I like about this centre is they do allow kids to progress at their own pace. My son went for P1 trial class and was allowed to progress to P2 thereafter (subjected to the teacher's consent).

did u request to progress to P2, or did the teacher suggested? (your post was in 2010)
we intend to stop Math hub as we find it not rigorous enough, although they have a fun learning environment. when his teacher said that they are going to do multiplication next lesson and my boy said he knows his times tables, he said the teacher asked if he wants to teach the class instead. not sure if it was supposed to be a joke, but my boy was upset. to give the teacher the benefit of the doubt, maybe my boy sounded cocky.... 🤷

We requested for it directly after the trial class. But even with P2 Class, my son didn't find it challenging. So, we dropped the class after 2 or 3 lessons.

How long has your son been attending Maths Hub? You might want to have a word with his teacher about his progress and discuss about skipping levels or joining the Maths Olympiad classes.

On hindsight, I feel that if a child has a strong preschool foundation on Maths, he/she probably doesn't need any enrichment classes in lower primary, especially P1 & P2.

Your son is so cute. I would think the teacher is just joking. 😄

Yup, he's working on secondary maths. I had the intention to prepare him to take the IGCSE Math exam last year, but my husband was against it. He prefers him to have a good and sound Math foundation. So, we are just following the Singapore syllabus at a leisure pace.

there is a paid trial class. slightly more ex than their regular class perday rate.
                        this is their programme structure
