I think I have experienced both ends in one child, and also contrasting my two kids. When a child is slow it is really dreadful, sitting there forever. I had to really sweat over ds1 before he was given the correct help for reading and writing. But I intuit that doing short periods of work should be better if a child is slow because fatigue makes things less productive. homework cannot be helped most of the time (though I did ask the teacher for extension) but for actual learning, I try to find the most efficient ways rather than sit there for hours. Dreadful. And believe me,I have sat there for hours for very simple pieces of work that were well within my son's mental abilities, but beyond his visual and physical abilities.
Same here! Had a lot of difficulties with one child, and had to handhold a lot for P1 and P2, and over the years, have learned to see when she is getting too tired for work to be productive. In the early years, we did work in 15-30 mins spurts. She has built up her stamina and concentration over the years but is still weak in those areas for her age. The younger child has been a breeze because she does almost everything under her own steam, and works hard and fast. -
Coaching methods...even if it is well-planned, also depends on child's character for it to be successful. It is not one-size-fits-all :frustrated:
My daughter has short memory...she can remember one min and the next it can be forgotten...her P1/2 years were painful.
Though we speak English at home, preparing for the exam is a totally different thing. Thought my son would not have any problems with English...but how wrong I was. -

Agree with Janet. We both just went through hell past 2 years so to gear up only at P5/6 is too late. Actually I think we weren't even that relax to begin with but the jump from P4 to P5/6 is just a bit too big.Sorry to say this...going full force at P5 is a bit late...if Chinese is weak like my kids, start early...I started kids when they went to K2. The only foundation son has in primary school is Chinese...I spent quite a bit of time coaching him on top of having tutor (just once a week).
English is another area to build foundation on...with 3 subjects (English, Math and Science) using English, I have to admit I am kiasu with my daughter now. Son has kinda grasped English at Sec 1...last year was uphill struggle. -

My DS no.1 also like that so I know what you mean. I had to devote so much time that I had to completely stop working just to sit next to him to make sure that work was done. This is a terrible problem in P5/6 when the work just comes back in piles.
I am not so lucky. My girl is unable to focus & she is a slow worker. Work that can be complete in 1 hour, she will take 2 hours. Every kid is different. I think Janet will understand my girl & my situation better. -
educational standard/expectations has been brought down to lower level…so do not start pushing only at p5…or else child will be burnt out…as it is, p3 is already crazy…don’t know about other schools…but my daughter has 完成对话，写便条，comprehension oe with that 找词语 from passage this year.
left son to study on his own…ask teachers or daddy for help. -
Janet we will both be the same boat again in 2016. O Levels and PSLE at the same time! Not fun thinking about it.
DS no.2 is more independent but still very playful, not at all mature compared to his peers. He has survived well on this own for the past 2 years when I was devoting all my time to DS no.1. All subjects 80+ and above, very different from DS no.1 who puts in all the hours to take back much lesser. Every child is different. Anyway, I'm starting to sit down with him to study and I realized that DS no.2 might be in for a stormy ride soon. There is a jump from P2 to P3 and his foundation is not quite there though the results on paper was fairly good.
DS no.1 got plenty of knowledge but can't get it out due to very poor concentration. DS no.2 results looks ok on paper but knowledge missing in huge chunks! Both headache in their own ways. :slapshead: :frustrated: :scratchhead: -

Actually I have the same feeling as you. like you, i have also invested a lot of time during my girl's primary school time. I thought when she go to sec one, she can be independent on her own, no need me to coach her so much compare to P6. But with the tons of home work and projects, plus the teacher has high expectation on them, I don't think I'm able to let go of it. I still need to monitor as closely as before.Hi ammonite,
Now I truly understand why have kids at younger age.
The energy level is depleted after coaching older one...to make things worst, the standard is tougher and when have to coach younger one, it can be very tough.
I have invested a lot of time when he started primary school...last year, I felt totally drained. Just cannot face his work anymore...sec stuff is out of reach.
Kids in schools now have it real tough...endless tests/exams now are just one of many. Preparation is mentally draining...at the end of the day, is it worth it? Poor child is stressed...parents are also feeling that way. This is not holistic nor balanced. -
my son at sec 1...considered quite auto-pilot to get homework done but teachers are fiercer (and forgetful)...he handed in report but teacher insisted she doesn't have it, so last night had to reprint.
history, i can still help but it requires reading on his part...geography, science and math is hubby's area :siam:
i let go in the sense that i don't breathe down his neck. -
Sometimes I find that certain teachers are very unreasonable. No matter how hard the student tried to explain, they choose to ignore and think they are always right.

if some teachers still want to behave like they are kings and what they say is IT...they really belong to museum.
