Hi. First time posting. Long time browsing this forum. I'm wondering if anyone can give me advice about enrichment class for P1 child. My son is in P1E and he's a bit weak in math (meaning no interest). I've looked at several math enrichment classes for P1 around Serangoon and Ang Mo Kio area. Seems like the P1 Math classes are not filled at all and thus can't open up a class. I mean, for P1 is it necessary to take math enrichment class yet... or just buying assessment books from bookstore will do? Same goes for the English and Chinese class? Thanks in advance.
You might want to try out this magazine (http://www.add-venture.com.sg/). My dd enjoys doing the exercises and the magazine is not so dry. -
Hi all,
Have not dropped the forum for a while. Good to see that it is still active :-).
Hi ForeverW,
My DS2 brought back a lunch bag from school yesterday that was lost by DS1 at the end of January 2013! We thought it was lost at another place. DS2’s teacher saw Ds1’s name written on the bag and passed it to DS2 since she did not know where DS1’s classroom is :-). So TGPS students are actually quite honest :-).
Hi Cmum,
I went with DS1 this time for a LJ at Chinatown today. The weather was hot and humid and the kids were tired from the great deal of walking. However, the kids had a great time eating at China Town market as well as shopping for souvenir. The tour guide gave very details and interesting information about the history and architectures of ChinaTown which I hope the students will find them interesting as well. I agree with you. Going for LJ is every bit worth taking leave for. -
Great that you enjoyed yrself. Not all PVs get to follow the child’s class. It’s first response first allocated class kinda system.
Anyway, Term 2 has started and I find that time flies. My DD is already so used to TGPS she seems to know every nook and corner of the school already. She is not strong at MT so though there is no assessment so far, I’m just waiting to see which class she gets allocated to in Term 3. Heard that the class allocation is strictly by results.
I signed her up for Berries since Jan to boost her MT. I think she’s drowning as the vocabulary and reading passages are way beyond her to cope. Thought of switching her to EduPlus which has a centre quite near to TGPs. Anyone tried EduPlus before? -
Hi Beauty79,
Indeed, not all PVs get to follow their child's class as for Learning Journey, we usually encountered \"Supply exceed Demand situation\"...
As a LJ coordinator, we would try our best that ensure that every PV has the chance to go with their child's class. If you are interested to join your DD's class for LJ, please indicate your interest to the FT, so that they will have a record and can inform the LJ coordinator.
Also most of the time, the LJ coordinator is racing against time to get PV for the LJ to ensure that every class has a PV as we are working on tight schedule.
We are always looking for ways or process to improve the allocation system, so if you have comment or feedback to improve the system, please feel free to PM me or share via the forum. I am happy to \"soak in\" any suggestions.
Thanks,

hi
My DD is in P1, teacher feedback that she could not cope in class. How? -
concern_mum:
Did the teacher shared what she can't cope? My son was telling me that weaker pupils are already drawn out during math and English lessons to be given more individual attention.hi

Or is it coping with behavioural issues or coping with class procedures? -
Hi Ninjago
She is already in the LSG, but still could not cope. -
Hmmm… Every kid is different… Seriously I felt my DS preschool did not prepare him well for P1 so I had to bridge a lot of gaps too. At K2 he was given spelling and was doing worksheets but I felt he was not reading on his own and it was only recently that I read from newspapers that it is a pre-requisite to P1! So many preschools are still not doing enough and the gap between the good and average pupil is widening.
For English, choosing the right level books and reading with them daily would be necessary - if she has a elder sibling, think can get them to do the job too.
For math, have to keep working on number bonds as they are still on numbers less than 10. But now on topic of number positions and lengths, which involves English, so if not strong in English becomes disadvantaged again. -
Hi concern_mun,
Did the FT share with you any advice? Is she weak in reading or understanding the concept of math? I understand the school has reading program in the morning to help students who has difficulty in reading. The program are supported by some parent volunteers. Is this something she can try?
Since P1 is not graded for their result, you could use this year to help her gradually progress. Do talk to the FT or the principal to see what can be work out with the school to help your girl. You may need to spend more time with her to help her to understand what is taught in school. Get the FT and subject teacher to communicate to you regularly so that you know what is taught during lesson and you can revise with her at home. More important is don’t let her feel discouraged and lost interest in school. I believe with lots of patient, encouragement and love, she will be able to slowly progress. -
Hi Ninjago and Rejoice137
Thanks for your encouraging words. She has problem with independent reading which i believe resulted in her having problem with the Math too. She could not grasp the concept of addition and substaction. 1 of the most sticky problems i have is she is always very tired and fall asleep immediately when she returned from the after school care. As such, i hardly have time to revise with her the school works and spelling except Sunday. She even missed her dinner some of the night as she was too tired.
Do your kids go to the after school care?
