        Wish to find out more-

        1. Must buy violin before start lesson? Honestly, I see it even more necessary to get a voilin before starting lesson as compared to getting a piano.

        2. Is it important to get a good (read: expensive becos of its good quality) violin right from the start?

        3. Is violin difficult to maintain? Need regular tuning? Expensive to maintain?

        4. How soon do young children upsize their violin? What determines the size if violin - height of the kid?

        Sharing will be much appreciated.

Get teacher to recommend the size before you buy violin.

Size is generally from neck to the scroll of violin landing on the center inside of your palm.

Duration between upsizing depends on the growth rate of your child.

Violin - you can tune it yourself. Yes, frequently. Not expensive to maintain. Just change strings every few months. Sometimes we go without changing for quite a long while.

            Thanks Phankao.

If you could recall, I asked a Lot of questions in the piano teacher/school thread too. The little one has recently asked for violin lessons. Probably inpired by the recent sso performances he has attended/watched/listened.

I can remember your name, but I can't remember how old your little one is.

Why just ask for violin? There are so many other instruments in the Orchestra! ;D

Seriously, violin is one of the most competitive instruments. Cello comes a close second.

He just turned 5. Brought him to two sso concerts so far (within this year) and brought a few orchestra and "induction" CDs ( those which explain/introduce about instruments, definition of concerto/orchestra/symphony, how cello sound like and what’s the diff between violin vs viola vs cello etc). He was so hooked and enjoyed it all (me too). To be continued. Little one calling…

                  Ok back.

He is probably very intrigued by violin becos most of the pieces we are listening are violin pieces eg vivaldi’s four seasons is one of his fav. It may not be his true passion, if you know what I mean. Since he asked, I thought I better research a bit more to determine if I shd send him for violin lessons.

Smeone told me that violin is only suitable for those kids who love challenges. Sounds very difficult to learn…

He also asked for drum lessons. But I thought that can come later.

I asked that bc he could also learn flute, for instance. There's a model (with the bent mouthpiece) that is used for small kids to learn. I'm not sure if there are other Orchestral instruments suitable for small kids to learn? Bc even the Cornet is quite big for a preschooler for instance.

What Linley says is true. SSO musicians can play but doesn't mean they can teach. If you ask ABRSM to show you their annual results (if it's possible to do such a thing) you'll be shocked to see whose students tend to perform the worst in practical exams :scared:

                      LINLEY:
Hi, just wanted to share my experience that not all SSO musicians are good music teachers. Charge high rates but bad, bad teachers.

                        Hihi!

A few months ago quite a number of parents here were asking me for my son's violin teacher contact... Unfortunately that time he was full so could not take in any new students.. But now that the Sept exam period is over, he has a few slots opening up as some of his students will be leaving after completing their Grade 8/Diploma :rahrah: If anyone is interested in his having his contact, pls PM me 😂

P.S. He takes in students for all grades, but minimum age is 6 years old (5 years old i think possible, subject to interview 😉

hi.. Can email me your violin teacher's contacts please. My dd is taking up violin and I think she will need help.

                        Thanks a million!
