I'm just a normal dad...really...my DD1 is 3 y.o and DD2 is going to be 1 soon...hehe...think I KS so I better start asking and learning parenting tips from experienced parents like yourself...hehe....

This may not be the right thread for you then. Here, parents are discussing the nuts and bolts of preparing for PSLE. For your kids, start laying the foundation - developing attention span, loving books, asking questions, delaying gratification, developing tidiness and organisation skills. If those are in place, the academic skills will fall into place much more easily when the time comes.

      Thanks slmkhoo.

I'm really very impressed and at the same time, wondering if daily cultivation and enforcing of the right habits like loving reading, asking questions (and parents being very willing to answer them patiently) and developing tidiness and organisation skills play a part in helping children including the P6's to face and manage the challenges, which come along with the PSLE, with the right mindset.

IMHO, i think how the parents bring up the kids since young, what kind of values and habits the parents teach the kids etc can really help a kid in coping with the PSLE challenges.

Although tecnical instructions such as how to solve the Math questions using this or that technique (let's say in regards to Math) will come in handy, the child will also need to be taught the right mindset so that he can be in a positive state to tackle all these hard Math questions while telling himself that it is ok to explore different ways, it is ok to fail and it is ok to just move on to another solution.

And looks like this mindset is quite similar to how parents teach the children since they are young...

      My 2 cents,
      John

This thread is very quiet. Recently the forumers that posted here are not those that have DC sitting for PSLE this year. Where are you all?

SA1 is coming in less than 3 weeks' time...so many parents could be focusing on the prep for this right now... 🙂

I'm just wondering though most traditional study methods focus on how much time we have, how does one make sure the study method is the most effective with the use of as little time as possible? like using less hours to learn and retain more...and like Parkinson's Law, achieving more in less time...

[/quote]We set targets in understanding/achievement/preparation rather than time. Eg. when my daughter was preparing for PSLE, we set her 6 problem sums a day - if she finished them and all corrections/queries, she was done whether it took her 1 hr or 6 hrs. This also gives the child an incentive to work fast. Why do things faster if the result is that you are given more work?

My P6 Kid is a bit over stress. Three structured programme per week after school fot two hours. After school, still homework for Maths, English, Chinese. (Science depends whether that day having science lesson). And i found out that she tends to make a lot of careless mistakes on her works. Dont know what the use of the schoolto push the kid to the extreme?

Maybe my girl is not mature enough because not all the children felt tired. Some of them still so energentic after the structured programme. Maybe girls were feel more stress than boys as they need to face their puberty plus school works. Some of her classmates reflected that girls are so troublesome and will be so moody and tired on that particular days of the months.
What is this structured programme? Is it Supplementary session by the school?

Why not communicate with the teachers and negotiate for some reduction in the homework? Or ask that your girl be excused from the afternoon programme depending on how beneficial it is? I don't think it's worth doing so much if she is too tired to absorb the material or do it properly.
