Thx for yr advice. I admit I am not firm enough. My ds has not been handing in his hw on time for the past few wks. As he is weak in maths, I have started to get him to do sa1 papers. He can take days even weeks to complete few questions. :frustrated: Must learn from all the experienced mummies :rahrah: here.

Topics to be tested for maths is the same as yr dd’s sch but my ds’s sch has additional questions from P2 topics like fractions, money and time.

Last term, most did badly in their maths test as there were too many questions.
Sec a - 15 mcqs
Sec b - 15 short answer que (4 que req 3 steps of workings)
Sec c - 4 long answer que
Sec d - 7 long answer que

So roughly about 15 problem sums.

My daughter is slow…so her science teacher has been extra patient with her…instead of focusing on entire MCQ and OE areas, she advised me to focus and score in MCQ section 30 questions. That itself is no walk in the park bcos science is no ‘tikam’.

3 more years...still got time to solidy and strengthen the foundation....when you say weak in maths, which area is he specifically weak in? and weak means what? not being able to understand, or can understand but can't apply or have absolutely no idea what's going on?

lets see if we can explore solutions from these new inputs...

All said , getting stressed in unexpected bursts. This DS is a different ball game compared to my DD.

Just keep reminding myself, the kids - they grow up too fast. The naughtiness, the laziness, the blur-blur face - in a few years they will out grow those. Atleast sometimes take in that, and relish it. I sometimes feel nostalgic about those days with DD. :love:

So we have a nice 3year+ journey together here. Lets share our frustrations and joys :grphug:

my daughter is totally different from elder boy.

kids grow so fast...the suicide case of the nus student made me think if it is necessary to push kids so hard. on one hand, if we know our kids are capable of doing better, we want to stretch them but how much?

after they grow up, those blur-blur mischievous faces will be replaced by tired and stressed ones. we should take time to enjoy our kids.

i dare not look at p3 past year exam paper...so scary esp for some schools.

I'm sure the majority of Sg parents feel this way. There is just so much pressure to perform!
For my dd in Maths, I found that she needs regular (almost constant) review, only then does she retain the material taught and can do well when tested. If we somewhat neglect a certain topic - don't review it often enough - then she is sure to get a \"progressing, needs help\" assessment for that topic.
For Science, otoh, dh and I are quite clueless how to help her. Science is only done twice a week in school, and there is very little homework or worksheets sent home. In contrast, Maths is done daily and there is plenty of homework/weekend worksheets sent. So we have a pretty good idea about how she fares in Maths and how we can help her.
Add to that the fact that each school has it's own sequence of Science topics and each school appears to cover Science in varying depths. So we can't even use other schools' Science papers to test our dd's knowledge.
I'm waiting to see how she does in this SA1. It is the first exam she will have Science. We will decide how to proceed based on how she fares this time.
