I like exchanging ideas too but feel uncomfortable in voicing out question or opinion when my kid is never certified. Unlike most of the parents in this thread, mine is not early reader. He picks up reading in nursery & now his reading skills just two levels ahead of average P1. Just his intensity in reading the same topics for months to find out everything about 1 topic (I've got to do the reading aloud when he was younger) is simply nauseating for me. Of course, reading the same topic over and over again, the brain just simply absorb what is being read right?
I think my son is bright but I'm sure there are so many other kids with enrichment that are able to write A to Z in sequence, both in capital & small letter on a blank piece of paper before the age of 4.
Mine speaks early too. Innocent stranger who wanted to see if my boy's brown curls are for real are in for a real shock. \"Hey! Stop touching my hair, I don't like it\". He must be irritated enough to gather courage & learn the words to get stranger's hand off his hair.[/quote]Hi En,
I'm not sure if my son could write that too at 4 year old. Never trained him to. But he wrote \"I love mom\" on a piece of paper to me when he was just few days shy of his 4th birthday.
On the contrary, my boy spoke late at around 28 months old. He was 'talking' a lot before that but we couldn't understand him. But when we started understanding his 'talking', he was talking in long complete sentences.
Really cute of your son to tell people off. I wish I had mustered enough courage then to do the same thing.
Like your son, mine is outspoken too. At 3+ years old, he was telling a much older French girl (loudly) not to shout in the playground  -

I really laugh out loud when I read this. I am all for changing the title. But I think only ChiefKiasu can change it.
Hmm, maybe the thread could be titled \"Parents who think/suspect their kids might be Gifted\"?
ChiefKiasu,
Do you mind helping to change the title ?chamonix:
I totally agree. On nurturing, I think every kid are different in his/her needs. Even among the Gifteds, I supsect each may need a very different nurturing method. Just my view.
chamonix:
How about the ability to understand difficult concepts effortlessly ? Creativity ?Btw, how to differentiate between Gifted and Bright kids? Some bright kids (who didn't make it for GEP) that I know require very few repetitions, learn fast and have good memory too.
I think that those bright kids who didn't make it for GEP may be really gifted. May be their parents never send them to enough GEP preparatory schools ? As I mentioned before, the GEP selection process is flawed, IMHO. I do not think that it is a good way to judge whether a kid is gifted or not.chamonix:
My girl has very good fine motor skills, she can sit quietly for hours to draw and write. But I wish that she can be more like your son, and spend more time reading tooBut I think it's a great thing that your gal is motivated and self directed in writing. Mine simply have no interest in writing. He's motivated in a different way - he would often read, then turn his head towards me and test my knowledge.

Glad to know we are on the same wavelength. Thanks for sharing your experiences. I think you have every reason to be proud of your son
and I think you must have done something very right, by providing the right environment to nurture your gifted son
Thanks, tamarind. It's always so warming to read your postings compared to the others which are so hurting. I was telling my husband when I chanced upon this forum that there are a lot of well-educated parents with high integrity in this forum. I was very hesitant to register myself at first as I feel inferior about my language ability even though I would also like to share my experiences with other parents.
When I post my concern to seek for advices and opinions from other GEP parents over here, I was trying very hard to be diplomatic in order not to hurt other non-GEP parents' feelings. However, I am still being bombarded with things like \"boasting\" and \"sending my boy for GEP preparation course\" which I definitely have not done so. So far there is only one kind parent (lizawa) who is sincere enough to post her opinions regarding my concern, very disappointing... -

Hi Windflower, I reviewed the posts in the http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?t=30 and I don't think you are being maliciously targeted in the least. We are all happy for you that your child may finally be getting the support and attention he deserves from our education system.
Yes, we may be kiasu, but we are all really very nice parents
. The naughty ones I have already sent to the principal for caning.

Thank you very much, ChiefKiasu. Actually I really enjoy reading all the comments posted by the kiasuparents here so far, except the hurting ones.Hi Windflower, I reviewed the posts in the http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?t=30 and I don't think you are being maliciously targeted in the least. I really hope that all the kiasuparents here can regard me as one of your kiasufamily members, despite me being a GEP parent-to-be.
I was also wondering why my white ribbon is changed to a yellow one suddenly, are my eyes playing tricks on me? Does it mean that I am promoted to 2nd level of kiasuism? -

Of course you are welcome in our kiasu family. In fact, I'm sure a number of parents with \"suspected giftedness\" in their children will probably be looking up at you for advice.
Yes, you have achieved the Yellow-Belt Kiasuism level
There are many more levels to go. The highest we have now is Brown-Belt, led by jedamum. Nobody has achieved Black-belt yet - the supreme KiasuParents nirvana.

Hmm.. how about \"Parents who suspect their children may have contracted Giftedness\"?

Don't say \"advice\" lah. I am always willing to share with other parents who are interested to know some of the characteristics my boy possesses, but please don't ask me which training centre for GEP preparation I sent him to (very sorry, still can't get over my sadness). I am now under his training on editing my posts (he is my editor for all my postings). So if you discover any errors, it is his fault. Ha ha...Of course you are welcome in our kiasu family. Cheers to jedamum for attaining the highest level of kiasuism in the family!

Sorry to hear that you are feeling sad reading some of the posts in this forum. Feel free to share your experiences in this thread, which is created for parents who have certified gifted kids, or think/suspect that their kids are gifted  or like ChiefKiasu said :ChiefKiasu:
:lol:Hmm.. how about \"Parents who suspect their children may have contracted Giftedness\"?
I guess I just want to find a platform where parents like us to speak freely. Each of us may have different opinions with regards to the GEP, or the selection process, or how giftedness should be measured, or how a gifted child should be nurtured. All opinions are respected

just to contribute my 2 cents
I used to think that my girl is exceptionally bright (able to piece 24 pcs puzzles independently at 2yo, mastered multiplication at 4yo, read way way beyond her age group)
hmm⦠maybe even scale towards giftedness?
then I realized there are so many children who are super high achievers. They are fast learners with excellent memory, read widely & extensively too
So many high achiever kids in Singapore. To not be one would probably be an exception rather than the norm in future??!!
