Parents may want to consider spending sometimes knowing themselves, when making school selection decision for the child, whether it is really for the parent themselves, or for the child . For example, I know someone, with kids PSLE results good enough to qualify for any secondary schools. But that parent influenced the child not to select the top schools. Reason is she thinks children in top schools mostly come from affluence background. That parent thinks it will be stressful for herself when she can’t keep up , if her child starts to compare themselves with these affluence kids in lifestyle areas. Whether parents aware it or not, their own outlook (personal hopes and fears) will influence their education decision. If parents can take care of themselves, they may be more balanced, and decision for child education may be more balanced too.

Just to share a bit. My eldest dsa sports into a top school. The decision back then was fairly easy bc it was a highly coveted dsa position from a top performing sports team in sec Sch that my eldest had demonstrated she’s worthy. Her pri Sch coach actually set her on this path or target to enter this dream Sch since P5 so there was no other Sch that mattered to her. As parents of cos we are concerned about the academic pressure bc we wanted her to be happy more than anything else. I actually told her to accept another CO of a lesser sec Sch instead. Her desire to enter the Sch was so strong (competitive streak in her) that she worked doubly hard for PSLE after she had gotten the CO. She also wanted to prove she is no lesser in acad as well. She surpassed her prior results in PSLE and her form teacher was unbelievably happy. Yes she did feel the pressure in the school but ultimately bc she worked hard so she was never at risk and progressed easily to the JC. That’s why I believe the child’s input is very impt here.

Wow! That's early (over a month by MOE's standards). When do most schools start sending out their results?

Yes agreed - just to clarify, you asked her to accept CO of “lesser sec Sch instead” but she decided to work doubly hard for PSLE to prove she is no lesser in academics than students in dream school or the “lesser school”? Which school (dream or “lesser”) did she accept CO of in the end?

Eventually she stuck to her guns and accepted the CO from the champion team/Sch.

Just wondering what would the considerations be for like performing arts since there isn’t quite a champion school per se.

Asking on behalf of a friend who is torn between NJC and RVHS, which schools if child likes both schools?

                      Thanks!

Presumably, if there isn't a \"champion school\" for a specific talent, then the considerations relate more to the school itself, e.g. school name, culture, past year performance, alumni, activities, convenience etc.

Those are my guiding principles too, by the way.
