I think the reality is that the AL System's Total Score is also more volatile than the prior system (t-score). A handful of marks can move you up or down 2-3 total AL levels. The final result looks a lot different but the underlying performance was not really that different.
This is sooo true.. can easily drop 1 band per subject just making that 1 extra careless mistake for example. The difference between a AL4 and AL8, is not really that much especially if both are borderline cases. Under tscore, this different wouldn’t show up that much but under AL system, it’s doubled, abit more extreme. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that the 2 kids are very different in terms of capabilities. That’s the stressful part, so I think chasing for marks is even more crucial under AL system.

        Yes,

carelessness in PSLE Maths calculation under stress exam condition, can cause students to miss by one band

        Eg.

If a kid is hovering at the boundary (or at the border), careless mistakes made
        Eg.

86 marks (AL 2) for Maths,
        can slip into
        84 marks (become AL3)

        Or

80 marks (AL 3) can slip into
78 marks (become AL 4), etc

        For PSLE Science,
the carelessness can come via answering the Multiple Choice Section questions.

        Eg.

If a kid did not read the MCQ thoroughly, carefully in detail, sometimes, can be \"tricked\" subtedly.

        Under AL system,
        for every single subject,
        once a kid is careless,
an expected Total AL4, for the 4 subjects, may turn into an un-expected AL 8, overall.

But, if the Secondary school's official Cut off point is AL 6, with a secured CO under your belt, even if AL 8, no worry.

For those who are sitting on CO, I think it is OK to ease off the gas for a bit. Most of the kids will still want to do well and they can ramp back up in the 1 week or so before PSLE (written papers). Sometimes less is more. On the other end of the spectrum, exam fatigue may be starting to set in with some. There are only so many practice papers one can do before the attention isn’t as sharp.

Anyways, kids respond in different ways to having a clear path to their secondary school and/or how to peak at the right time (i.e. the real papers). If no need to worry, then don’t worry so much.

Best of luck and wishes for all.

I agree with you. Since the selection of dsa schools is done after the p s l e. I don’t know understand why it has to be announced before the p s l e.

Although one reason could be that the schools’ staff and coaches are unable to contain themselves and leak out the results to select students. Which is a even worse outcome than announcing it before p s l e.[/quote]
Also could be workload for sec teachers , after all , they are faculty & not just conducting DSA tests . After PSLE , usually sec exam , so no time for them then

The level of effort should be no different whether they issue the DSA results before 12 September or after 5 October, right? In fact, by allowing them to do so later ensures that there's less of a rush and may even be better coordinated. All the results can be locked in beforehand but only announced after the PSLE is over.

                My 2c.

                    Today’s Update (5 September)

TJC gets us going for this week, and this is followed by NYGH (ahead of its scheduled release on 6 September) 🙂

This will likely be a busy week with many key schools expected to announce their DSA results in the days ahead, just shy of 12 September which is MOE's deadline for DSA results. All the best to those students who are eagerly awaiting the good news.

Congrats to all who received COs & WLs. And, GOOD LUCK to all students and parents regardless!
