      Hi

Can anyone share what are your kids’ portfolio like for Robotics?

My DD2 is at P4 now. She is strong in Maths and Science.

Am thinking if she should DSA robotics or Maths.

Does one need to achieve outstanding results in the olympia Maths in order to get shortlisted?

Does the child need to go thru interview if we DSA Maths?

Thanks all for your kind inputs.

        Hi,

        anyone of u here,
from this current DSA batch of 2022 (born 2010), happen to be offered two COs?

        Eg.

        1) received one CO, from MGS (IB), plus

        2) received a second CO,

        from either
SCGS (IP A-level), heading towards Eunoia Junior College in year 5

        Or

from St Nick (IP A-level) ?

        If Yes,
and u are in a dilemma, mulling over which CO to accept,
        a wise answer is,
assuming that your daughter is strong in English -

accept the MGS (IB) CO !

        Why ?

        Because

It is not how u start in your Secondary 1 that is important. Instead,
it is how u are going to end up in, at the end of your final journey in year 6, that is important.

        Between
the year 6 IB exam syllabus

        Vs.

        Our Singapore-SEAB-modified-upon-A-level syllabus,

Not the original UK-A-level syllabus, taken raw out of Britain -

the IB syllabus in Year 5 and 6,
Is so much easier to study and to score in,
        compared to
our very tough and challenging Sg-SEAB-modified-A-level syllabus

Do u know, how u can tell that the IB syllabus is so much easier to study and to score, in the IB compared to the A-level syllabus ?

Just take a look, at the syllabus of these 2 subjects, first -
        Maths and Science

Why I choose these 2 (Maths and Science) ?

        Because
for university admission, Maths is very important.

And for Science stream higher education tertiary students, often, Chemistry is compulsory. But if u don't want to look at Chemistry, also can. You can take a look at Physics or Bio yourself, depending on which subject u going to study in Year 5, if not Chemistry. Just compare the (IB vs. A level) syllabus for Physics or for Bio, if u are a Science student, but not keen in Chemistry.

        Do your own homework.
Take a look at the year 5 and 6 IB syllabus, for these 2 subjects (Maths and Chem / Physics / Bio) from either IB (SJI or ACSI)

        And

Then, compare this against our Singapore SEAB website for A-level (Maths & Science), these 2 subjects. You can see the difference !

        Remember !
Don't look at the wrong A-level syllabus. Don't look at the original, raw state UK-based-A-level syllabus.

        Why?

        Because

        In Singapore,
our several thousands of year 6 A-level students every year,
        from

(RI / Hwa Chong / National JC / Victoria JC / Temasek JC / ACJC / Catholic JC / St Andrew JC / Dunman High / River Valley High / Eunoia JC / Nanyang JC / Anderson-Serangoon merged JC / Tampines-Meridian merged JC / Yishun merged JC, 3 years' A-level Millenia Institute, etc. ),

our children are not sitting for the easier, original UK-A-level exam,

which many of our Malaysian counterparts or \"cousins\" will run back home,
\"bakek rumah\" back to their hometown in (Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Sarawak, Sabah, Johore) to prepare for this easier A-level quickly.

Instead, our Sg citizens children are sitting for the very tough, high expectations of Sg-SEAB-A-level.

Robotics DSA usually requires competition awards & trial, on top of interview.

You need to check whether the secondary school(s) you are keen offers Robotics as a DSA Talent Area (refer link below)

            https://www.moe.gov.sg/schoolfinder/?journey=Secondary%20school&q=*&fq=school_journey_ss%3A%22Secondary%20school%22&fq=admission_types_dsa_b%3A%20true&fl=*&sort=school_name_s%20asc

There is a limit of 3 DSA choices (either 3 different schools/talent areas with up to 2 talent areas for the same school).

In general students who DSA successfully via Maths (esp in top IP schools) have done well in popular Maths Olympiad competitions (eg NMOS, APMOPS, RIPMWC).

Every secondary school has its own selection criteria/process (it can also change from year to year). Some need interview, some don't.

            All the best.

For boys, then similar comparison would be getting ACS(I)/SJI IP leading to IB vs Catholic High IP leading to A Levels?

DS is in mainstream, sch results consistently around AL8 or so, weak in languages but strong in math and science. Based on psle grades, he probably would not make it into RI.

He has platinum for SMOPS, gold for NMOS, HD for RIPMWC and gold for IMSO.

He says the DSA selection test and interview went well. For the interview, he was the one who spoke the least in the group of 3. However, he was asked to prove something math related on the spot and managed to do so. He is generally quite reserved but cheerful. Hope this helps.
                Thanks for sharing.

It is really impressive that your DS achieved such outstanding results for the 3 popular MO competitions. :rahrah:

Interview is just part of the selection process. Unless it is something out of the ordinary, it will not affect the DSA outcome (Maths) for a strong candidate.

Do encourage him to continue work on his languages and once again, all the best for his PSLE!

Not now, they won't sent u the link now when u have not even sat for your Psle.

When do u get to exercise your DSA option ? Only AFTER your Psle is over, not now

DD2 participated in FLL (2021) and NRC(2022) but she did not manage to get any award. Does that means her chance of getting CO is very low?
