I've heard good things about the NUS High School for Maths and Science https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2055371#p2055371. Why don't you consider that too?

Thanks for your reply, NUSH is my first choice
Trying to narrow down second and third, kid seems really keen on pursuing science, specifically physics and he has always been quite strong in math

to gain basic understanding

Think some may not know the process of DSA.


Step 1
1) to submit the child achievement awards in the DSAapplication form by MOE.

2) wait for shortlist

3) when u received email from the shortlisted schools. The school will inform u what to be submitted. Every school is different.
Eg proof of awards or profile.

4) audition or interview

5) wait for result

My daughter got in through Maths DSA in 2022. She had written and achieved silver or bronze in several olympiads. The written test at the school wasnt too difficult. She used the NUS High Olympiad books for preperation mostly. :siam:

Yes I understand that every school has some form of written test for Maths and then interview

Is the NUS High Olmypiad books for P6 level? I thought they were higher standards.

Hi KSP,

Planning to apply dsa for my girl (P6 this year) via Drama. She is an average-score student. We already planned our choices of schools. But recently read about IB vs A level edu-structure. Seem IB is more oral presentation and research (dunno whether I m wrong or not). And also IB is for v good results students. I find it more suitable for my girl who is more vocal and like to do research based and writing. SATA seem to be IB and an option. But with my DD's average results, I am wondering am I having whimsical idea or what? Or just don't think too much, follow the original plan. Just want to know more and having better understanding. LOL! Thanks!

SOTA's IP ends with the IB diploma instead of A levels but the IB's 6 groups of subjects plus TOK, CAS and EE are only for the year 5 and 6. It is particularly useful to understand what the 6 groups of subjects are and you can find more info on the SOTA website.

IB is not just oral presentation and research and one who is more vocal may not do better than one who is less.
There is a lot of writing (esp for Language arts and humanities) and group and individual projects as well. One key thing to note is the need to be consistent throughout the year and not just study nearer to exams.

Some people mistakenly think that because the final year exam carries lesser weightage, IB is easier to score. I beg to differ. To score the 15% or 20% per project/IA, you need so many more hours to put together the required components of the project and it is very hard to get the 6 or 7 points for projects unless your work is really good. Whereas for A levels, you can just study and then do the questions in the exam. So time management and consistency in your grasp of the subjects are KEY to success.

IB sounds like A level’s project/GP, but covers wider spectrum and last longer?
