DSA 2023

NJC selection test on upcoming Wednesday - anyone got ideas what will be tested, please?
Thank you. -
Hi, wandering if the order of sequence during interview does indicate the preference of COs and WLs? Can anybody advise me?

By the end of August month end Timeline dateline,
all DSA P6 candidates will be informed, for each of the DSA domain they have applied for, whether they are
successful (received either CO or WL Waitlist) or
Un-successful (ie. Rejected).
Suppose a candidate, by end of August month end 2023,
1) received a Waitlist from Methodist Girls' School, for \"English\" academic subject, domain
And
2) concurrently, also received a CO from SCGS (Singapore Chinese Girls' School), for \"badminton\" Sports domain.
====================
Suppose PSLE is over, gone past the last PSLE paper already sat for.
When Is the last PSLE paper, over ?
Answer:
by the end of first week of October.
So, since PSLE is already over, both mother and daughter sit down together at home, to discuss.
Example
========
One parent asked her daughter,
\"Ah girl X, how did you perform in your PSLE so far, in all your 4 subjects ? What overall PSLE AL score u think ... u likely to score ?
Which DSA Secondary school, do u want to accept, now that your PSLE is over & done with ? \"
Suppose this pupil answer her parents this way :-
\"Mommy,
Actually, I am not really interested in that Sports domain (badminton) at SCGS, even though I did receive a CO from SCGS.
Because ...
Sports domain, the commitment is very heavy going. Every week, I must practise at least minimum 2, if not 3 times per week. Closer towards competition time, I must practise even much more frequently. SCGS give me this CO for a purpose behind, so that I can win medal for badminton & bring glory to the school. This imposes a burden upon me,
not to mention that
is certainly going to take up a lot of my precious, valuable time away, Mom, in terms of doing my own personal, revision time for so many Secondary school subjects.
Mom,
now in Secondary school, I need to study Total 8 or 9 subjects, no longer merely studying 4 subjects in the primary school. I will find it hard, to strike a balance for time management, between my Sports commitment to SCGS vs. my academics. I dont want to struggle, in my acdemics. So, Mommy, I have decided to ...
turn down SCGS CO (badminton Sports).
Instead,
I rather choose to take up MGS Wait list, for English subject domain.
Because ...
I think with my strong command of English, this can help me in my Literature, a new Secondary school subject newly introduced (added). \"
So, let's say,
above is this P6 student's own decision made. She owns this DSA decision making,
because
she is being self responsible, thinking for her own Secondary school education learning.
So, what happen ?
After PSLE is over,
there is a date to submit your decision making to MOE.
In this case,
since this pupil has explicitly chosen to give up SCGS CO (badminton Sports),
then
fill up only that one answer required, inside that DSA form to be submitted back to MOE.
That is -
She accepts the Waitlist (DSA outcome) for Methodist Girls School WL, for English subject domain. That's all.
After that, do what ?
Just wait for the PSLE results released announcement date to arrive, in November.
When this pupil finally receive her PSLE results in November, two possible scenario can happen.
Either her Wait list gets converted, or not converted. She will only know of this outcome, on the actual PSLE results Announcement date. Not even one day earlier.
A)
if her Wait list (English domain) gets converted successfully, Congratulations !
She is admitted into MGS Secondary school Sec 1, and not allowed to participate in S1 posting exercise anymore.
OR
B)
if her Wait list (English domain) wasn't converted,
then
based on her overall PSLE AL score for 4 subjects, she will choose 6 Secondary schools, to participate in S1 posting exercise.
Or the daughter could tell the mum after the PSLE that she felt she didn't do as well as she usually does (maybe nervous or not feeling well that PSLE week due to stress). Usually she gets AL6-7 consistently and the aim was to go to a IP girls school but after the PSLE papers she feels that she might get AL10. So after discussion with her mum, they decide to put MGS WL 1st choice and SGGS CO 2nd choice.
PSLE results come out and she gets AL9... 3 lower than what she usually gets. She's disappointed. Again, things can happen on the day of the exam and even 1 mark less for 3 subject can move you down for AL6 to AL9.
They then find out their WL from MGS was not converted to a CO... BUT thankfully they had the foresight to put their CO from SCGS as their second choice.... because now they have got a spot to SCGS which they wouldn't have got if they depended on their PSLE results or didn't even put on their rankings.
Now the daughter gets into SCGS.... a IP school which she would otherwise have missed out on. she will have to juggle her sports commitments with her studies. But now she's 13 years old and her past experience of sitting for her first major is under her belt and she knows what to expect in future exams.
This is the importance of COs and WLs and being tactical about how to rank them. -
For everyone’s reference if it may be helpful…
Timelines based on DD’s DSA 2022:
9th Sept: Received the last of the 3 schools sent out email on offers (MOE dateline was by 12th Sept)
4th Oct: Finished last PSLE paper (Science- no she did not take HMTL)
27th Oct: Email by “postman.gov.sg” to inform for school preference submission. (31st Oct - 4th Nov) This must be done even if you only have one school with CO or WL else you want to forgo the offers, you can choose to ignore and not submit.
31st Oct: Submitted school preference:
1st school- WL
2nd school- CO
23rd Nov: received PSLE results + confirmed school allocation (another piece of paper from MOE) to 1st ranked school. DD’s WL was converted to CO. -
👆 in the scenario above, would the CO at the 2nd school be passed down the line to a person holding a WL?
I’m thinking about how the MOE computer would sort out the logic of it (before PSLE results day). Does it mean that the schools are ranked (secretly)? -

I wonder the same thing about the algorithm behind. That means MOE or the system actually have already done all the ranking and review with the actual students’ scores before PSLE result day?

Once the school choices are made by the students, is it the school or MOE that that sorts out the WL?
I always thought, it’s the school… in the sense the school receives the list that accepted their CO, then they will go down the list of WL to decide who in the WL will get the conversions. Then this list of conversion is given to MOE to be released together with the PSLE results. -

Yes, i think you are right.

MOE will then hold on to the list until the PSLE marking days are over. Review the candidates’ final scores to see if meet the min requirements for the stream. If all in order, then start to finalize and print out the result slips and certs, ready in advance for PSLE release date. -

Yes, the school decides for itself. However, MOE will also need to sort out the students’ choices based on the school’s submitted results. For example, a student WL is converted means that student may forgo another CO. And that school (with CO rejected) will then have to convert its WL too?

In previous years there was some discussion about S1 posting using the new AL scoring system. Somebody postulated that MOE has all the students’ raw scores, and that all of them are ranked from the number 1 in SG all the way down. That’s how the computer can start to process from the top student’s first choice, allocate the school, then keep going down the list, until the school is filled, and so on. A lower ranked student wont get his choices processed before a higher ranked student.
So I wonder if for DSA exercise of preferences, there is a similar consolidated master list (from the top school’s list all the way down), otherwise where to start from?
The other possibility is the computer runs separate schools’ DSA lists independently. In which case there will be some forsaken COs that will not flow to any waitlisters?
