DSA 2023

We may roughly know the child’s capabilities. If the child can do it, just let the child do it. Some children may not know their limitations, that is when the adults may need to interfere.
I can’t wait for dd to go to secondary…and I would like to take a break from tuition. Looking at the fee, madness to me haiz. -

PSLE is but 1 phase.

Would like to seek advice.
Child P5 End year was AL9, but combined overall is AL10.
Vice captain in his sports CCA.
Participated in science and maths olympiad with participation award only. Have received edusave award for Eagles in P5 only and P2-P5 receive edusave academics and scholarship.
He wants to try RI, Victoria IP and NUSH.
Would it be advisable to DSA through leadership with vice captain or sports cca? -

How is the sport’s achievement? If top 3, then seems like a better chance to try using the sports for RI/VS. For NUSH, Olympian achievements are very important to get the door in so perhaps can try for better achievements here during P6.

\"edusave academics and scholarship\"

DSA = talent in the domain. Academics & Scholarship certs not really helping as 25% / 10% (25% of 40k P6 students = ~10k) of the students in Singapore are receiving the same. But these certs can be submitted as the supporting achievements, altho' not very useful. You can fill in up to 10 supporting achievements.
\"Vice captain in his sports CCA\". / \" Eagles in P5 only \"
Depending on the domain and the sec school your DS is applying, there are 181 primary schools in Singapore, hence hundreds of prefects, head prefects, chairs, captains will be eyeing the leadership domain. Same for Eagles, 10% of the 40K students are receiving the same each year. The top schools are going to be very competitive. Vice-chair will be more useful as supporting achievement when you apply under other domains (e.g. Sports / Math / Performance etc), but maybe harder if try directly under leadership domain.
\"science and maths olympiad with participation award only\"
Math & Science Olympiad cert need to be in Platinum / Gold level if applying under Math / Science domain. You may try to search the previous years' DSA forum to have a rough idea of the students' profile you are competing with.
Sports will be depending on the NSG/other key events' result, especially the current year's performance. Some schools stated their pre-requisite upfront - e.g. enter the NSG final. The schools are picking the talents who are able to represent the schools and to win the medals. Top schools are going to pick the top achievers.
Anyway, just try. DSA is a good experience. -
Concur with lakaik and imp75 that DSA sport is l better chance for Motherhere’s son. For RI/VJC, ideally need to be a champion. 2022 no NSG for primary, so performance in nsg 2023 is critical. Besides medalling, good to have a word with the current coach to be reference. A reputation that precedes the application is best. SG sports community is small so chances are they may know one another
Case in point
1) Soccer/floorball. My nephew DSA in 2021. Played club soccer and NSG / CCA in floorball. Abilities-wise can be pre-verified 100% as his coaches and targeted school coaches (VJC and neighbourhood school) all know each other. He only applied for neighbourhood school cos not confident of academics.
2) Hockey. A close friend’s son DSA to RI in 2019. Same thing… coach gave a strong recommendation. Went in despite one-off lacklustre p5 results. Believe school made a good assessment of the academics, since he is in Sec4 and doing well now
3) Judo. HCI under SA Judo and RI under The Dojo. But this one child MUST start earlier, MUST have interest and medal in National Children comp. Even if not under the 2 judo schools, if u become champ u at least will get the interview/audition unless academics is way off -
Dear all.
As a parent of a P6 girl, almost all are asking me if I am DSA-ing her into a good school. Frankly, I didn’t know much about DSA until now. As a result, I did not prep my kid to excel in something worth DSA-ing. She excels well in a sport that is not sought after.
She does Taekwondo with an external club. Her primary school HPPS does not have a TKD CCA. Since P1, she has been a podium finisher (50% gold medals, 45% silvers, 5% bronze) in all domestic competitions (sanctioned by STF) held here, and a couple of overseas competitions.
P1 she did not win anything at NSG cos she was the youngest competitor amongst the participants. P2 she fought back with a bronze, P3 and P4 covid, P5 last year she won gold. She also won 2 gold medals at last year’s Pesta Sukan. She is aiming to go for the National Youth Team selection next year. Her coach said she may stand a good chance at being selected. Her coach is also the secretary of STF. So his words carry some weightage.
Last year P5 SA2, she got AL7 for 4 subjects. Merit in higher Chinese.
I have checked. TKD is not a CCA in most secondary schools. The ones having it, are very far from where we are at holland area.
May I ask if I can write in to school principals stating my daughter’s strength in the sport, which may bring glory to the school? Does that help?
Or perhaps there is nothing to DSA in my situation. Better focus and rely on academics to get into good schools.
Any advices will be apprceiated by this blur father.
Thanks. -

Can she join nat youth team and win some national medals before dsa? If yes this may persuade some Sch to make an exception to accept her and her cca on that basis.

It’s quite straightforward. To DSA into a particular domain (in this case, TKD), refer to MOE School Finder.

If the domain is listed for a particular school, you can try and DSA into that domain; if it isn’t listed, you can’t. What the schools want / need is clearly listed. Schools won’t entertain write in else it’s a never ending story (may as well not have any domains since everyone can just write in offering their ‘expertise’).
For TKD, there are 4 schools listed (eligible for girls). If they are among your pick, great. If not, you can only focus on getting the schools you want the traditional way, ie PSLE result. -

I have a question, for team sports, how do they choose?
NSG seems to have a lot of weight for DSA sport. Is it true?
