Hello Parents,
may I find out more about DSA in Humanities?
What kind of achievements are required minimally?
Because at primary school level, I have no idea what kind of competitions or events or subjects are considered part of humanities. Hope experienced parents here can enlighten. 🙏🙏🙏
Ever entered into any recognised English or Chinese writing poetry, composed poem contests / competition, at Primary school level, before?
Literature (English / Chinese), fall into \" Humanities \" domain.
In Secondary schools, \"Humanities\" subjects include
(Literature, History, Geography)
But,
because
History & Geog are not taught in primary schools yet, so they will look at your languages (English / Mother tongue), when apply for Humanities. -

Yes,
Each child can submit up to 3 DSA applications. Would putting in 2 applications in diff talent areas (ie leadership & stem) to 1 specific school lessen the child’s chances as it seems to imply the child is trying too hard to get in?

You can apply to 2 different talent, within the same Secondary school. But if u get shortlisted for an interview, there will only be ONE interview. Not 2 interview, just because u applied for 2 different domain talent.
During interview, these people will be present :-
1) either Principal or VP (Academic), whoever is free, available, on that actual interview day itself.
2) the Cca teacher in charge, of the \"Leadership\" domain.
3) either the Secondary school Science HOD or the one, overall in charge of the \"STEM\" domain.
Questions, u need to prepare yourself, beforehand.
They may ask u these interview qns :-

4) why choose our Secondary school ? Why not choose other Sec schools, instead ?
Example
They may name one or 2 famous Secondary school names, just to purposely test u out, see how u respond, on the spot. They may remark, \"Oh ! You know ... this Secondary school X also has a very strong STEM domain. Did u apply to that school for DSA, since u have indicated that you have got strong passion & interests, for STEM ? Why not ? ... \"
Following are qns, they may pose, because they are interested and want to know more about you, the candidate ( herself or himself ).
5) Can u tell us more, about yourself ?
What are some of your strength(s) and weakness ?
6) Which is your favorite subject in primary school, so far ? Why ?
7) What hobbies, do u have ?
If there has been one very challenging incident or event (happening) in your primary school education so far or in life, what is it ?
Can u elaborate, more ?
How did u overcome this problem ?
9) if u attend SAP schools' interview like Dunman High (IP), St Nick ( IP ), River Valley High (IP), Catholic High (IP), Hwa Chong (IP),
If the interviewer happen to pose u questions in Chinese, then answer the interviewer politely, in Mandarin.
Because they may be testing your Mandarin proficiency level.
Finally, after attend the interview, if you are the one that the school still desire, school will offer u only ONE DSA outcome : either a CO or a Wait-list.
If a pupil (student) is offered Wait-list,
then,
depending on the pupil's Ranking within the Wait-list itself, the Wait-list may or may not be converted into a CO, in the end. If, in the unfortunate event the Wait-list not been converted into a CO, then the pupil will still need to rely upon his / her own PSLE results eventually, for admission into a Secondary school, through S1 (MOE) posting .

u will be invited to come down to the Secondary school premises and take some tests (internal assessments), to assess your suitability for \"STEM\". Passing or failing these tests, then determine the next step : whether u get invited to attend interview, or not. -

I’m concerned that placing 2 eggs in one basket will just make the child look too desperate to get into the school and eventually backfire and not even get interview opportunity.

putting 2 talent for the same identical school, can be common, for some girls. But not for all girls, though.

Some P6 girls are only interested in getting into one Secondary school : RGS, nothing else. Apart from RGS, they simply not interested in any other Secondary schools.
Why ?
Because they are confident that they can do well in PSLE, to enter RGS.
Eg.
They are confident of achieving
above 261 Tscore back then, under the old Tscore system.
For them, is RGS or nothing else. They not interested in adding in one more school for DSA, just to fill up the space given for maximum 3 DSA slots,
then
later towards the end of August when received CO news from the other Secondary school, end up in a dilemma situation :-
don't know what to do with this half hearted CO, to accept or turn down this CO ?
They don't want to waste time, applying for another DSA school. Is RGS, or nothing. Nothing meaning that,
if they failed at DSA (RGS),
then so be it.
They will still enter RGS, by PSLE route (Main door), through Tscore back then.
So, what they did was
applied for 2 different domain, inside RGS : Leadership + Mathematics
In the end,
this girl who is my friend's daughter back then in DSA 2019, from a popular SAP primary school :-
she wasn't successful for RGS (Maths), but RGS offered her Leadership CO, instead.
Out of the two domain which she applied for, RGS offered her only the one that they deem she is stronger, a better fit in, after evaluation & attending interview. She accepted the CO. Today, this girl is in IP (RGS), year 4 (2023).

To answer your question, u should ask your child,
because
your kid is the one, who is able to answer your qn -
How keen,
is your child, interested to enter whichever Secondary school she (he) is applying DSA for ?
1)
if your child is very keen, like in the above RGS illustration,
then
apply for 2 different domain, inside the same Secondary school.
OR
2)
if your child is only half hearted in that DSA school,
then
just apply for one domain, in each of the maximum 3 allocated DSA slots. Then see in the end, which Secondary school offer your child CO or Wait-list. -

Hi everyone! May I know what’s the requirements for DSA music elective? What profile of students? E.g. winning awards for piano competitions, ABRSM cert etc. Thank u for any advice.

Applying for 2 domains to a specific school can be interpreted as a sign of your eagerness to get admitted to that school. Last year, we applied to two domains for one particular school because we were solely interested in that school. My child was only shortlisted for one of the domain and was ultimately offered a CO. The other domain's application was concluded at the application phase. I presume that the school evaluated which domain they were more interested in regarding my child and thus didn't want to waste time on the other one.
