Hi All,
We r looking to buy a condo near MRT for staying, not in terms of re-sale / investment purpose. So looking for a unit that is spacious & near to MRT. In terms of cost & space, we find older units built around 2000 suitable. We would like to understand what are the problems we are likely to face. Can anyone share their experience & suggestions.
Thanks in advance.
I bought a ~20 year old unit a few years ago (pre-pandemic). We specifically targetted those in original condition, since we knew we were going to do a major renovation. When viewing the units, check the ceilings for any signs of leakage from above (especially the bathrooms). If the waterproofing of the unit above has worn out and leaks into your bathroom ceiling, it’s going to be major dispute for u to settle with the neighbour - just avoid that by not buying.
As for the common areas and shared facilities, we didnt expect much or use them much, so it was on for us if looked old. Playground a bit rusty eg monkey bars but ok to me since kid was in upper primary by then.
Rats and cockroaches - look out for signs of those running around the compound! I saw some rats in the gardens when viewing some units on rainy days. And check the rubbish chute area. We had to build some cabinetry door over it to conceal it as well as prevent the roaches from crawling into our kitchen.
We were very happy with the spaciousness of the unit though. Was a fantastic place to live in during the 3 year pandemic situation.
