For tuitions, apart from spending money, need spend time esp when need to chauffeur around. Waiting time/ lost time/wandering abt really don’t like. One dd told me not one time that tuition for her is wasting money only…actually I agree also…if can get lost when teachers in school delivering lessons…what makes the student can have different response with tutors? Another dd, say yes I want I want…after few lessons can see her dragging herself…and for me, apart from putting the tuition reminder on my hp calendar. I need to chg timing in the calendar after morning reminder pop up…so that it reminds me again after fetching them fm school then another round of chging timing/set alarm abt 1 hr fm going out. Very sian.

Yes very sian indeed. Last time I spent my weekends sending/waiting for my girls to finish their sports/dance training when they were younger. Was out practically the entire weekend on these waiting/fetching schedules.

This is not really what-if qn. Sounds like in your case, it’s probably a good investment if 1. It helps in bringing up the overall Chinese proficiency to get a shot at BSP which your girl eventually got it? 2. If Chinese is the only weak subject that may separate the child from
getting the ESIS or entry into top Sch, then I think worth a good shot at spending the investment esp if you cannot teach yourself ?
I do know people who spends $2000/mth on tuition in pri Sch even though the eventual aim is to go to non-ivy UK pre-college after O level and child already has an affiliated sec Sch. I cannot understand such parent mentality.
It’s as if I am a FTMW and cannot supervise my kids all the time and if they don’t do well, then I will ask myself, “what if” I were a SAHM, would things be better???

Assuming that I know my kid is not the academically inclined type, so even though my kid is able to make it back to his/her affiliated sec sch, I foresee that my kid is unlikely to compete in our local A levels system, more likely than not, he/she will go to Poly and from there, work for few years then maybe apply for (night) Uni.

Then in this case, if I can afford the fees, why not just let my kid exit the local academic rat race and go overseas after O to take a different route to get a degree?

Actually though dh & I never discussed face to face. We know that could be one solution…we are very ok with Poly route if can make it and kid is ok. But if the kid for some unknown reasons don’t properly absorb then how leh? Overseas studies also need to take exams mah.

Firstly, you need to find out what are the reasons your DD cannot absorb.

Is it due to some learning difficulties (like attention deficit) or is it due to poor time management? Or does she have poor understanding of some fundamental concepts?

When some kids attend TLL, where the pace is very fast, they may catch no ball because their fundamentals are weak. I used to give my niece 1-1 tuition when she was P6. As I found that her foundation was weak, I went through with her all the entire P5 curriculum one more time before we moved on to work on P6 topics. If my niece had been sent to TLL, she wouldn’t do well because she already lagged in P5 topics, then how could she absorb P6 topics taught at accelerated speed?

I met a young S’porean in his 2nd year at King’s College on Scholarship & aiming to complete his PhD there too. He was from a neigbourhood school & nvr really did well, finished studies in Poly but he started waking up & did well to score a scholarship. I can tel hes very driven & very active in the church he’s involved in London. He’s a leader to many young S’poreans in the Spore Student Club there.

I met ano Sporean young fellow who started working for the church in London & doing Arts. They all mature late but nvr too late, as can be witnessed fr the King’s College Sporean student who desire to return & serve in govt sector & seen how much more effective our govt is compared to English govt. He’s able to see many things in life as he witnessed the local community in England & involved in the volunteer work to bring food & clothings to the less provided families.

Hope this will encourage parents nvr to give up on their child & hope it inspire some young ppl to continue to strive for their future in areas they’re interested in.

Luckily both my kids are ok to pick Uni courses that their results bring them to. They do not have a course that die die they must get in.

But there are kids who are fixated since young to study only Medicine, Law, Veterinary etc. I have seen two friends downgrade their properties to send their kids overseas for Medicine course. Estimated cost of $600K and since my friends have more than 1 kid each, so they need to think of the siblings too. I suppose tuition will never cost me close to $300K if I can use tuition to send my kids into local med/law
Just learnt from another parent, a full TLL tuition from young can spend $100k :yikes: and from N2 can hit $200k (double yikes!) Most are not thinking of Med course bah.

$100k + 60k, can go overseas after poly liao or at least pri uni with overseas experience.
