Hey all, I am new to this and i am excited when i read all the contributions from you guys!
I am not the in-person for forum but i do feel that i need to share.
My son and my niece is with http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/enrichment/cma-mental-arithmetic since July 07. They teach using abacus using 2 hands.
Hm... frankly I cannot tell if it's beneficial to the children, still monitoring. But my son actually scored highest in his K2 maths exam. Though it's exam but think the teacher provide minimal guide when they do the papers.
Anyone has any recommendation on how to test my son? In order to determine if this course in beneficial? -

K2 also got exam?!! What is the world becoming? But your son seems very solid leh.. top of class for mathemetics! I remember the last time I was in PAP kindergarten I was number 37 in a class of 37. Play too much spiders and marbles.
Your son is probably living proof that abacus works for young kids, so I'm sure everyone is going to ask you who the abacus teacher is and what is CMA, so be prepared hor. -
His childcare centre gave exam with the intention to let them have a feel of 'doing work individually' like no peeping and copying from friends.... :lol:
Not sure if you have watched the chinese documentary called Superkids by Mediacorp? The boy who could count faster than a calculator is from CMA.
It's founder is a Taiwanese. Due to the country of origin, the english spoken in class is \"half past six\" - oops hope i wont get reprimand or sue by CMA if the person in charge read this! -
My girl is currently with CMA.
The main reason for me to choose CMA over other math enrichment center (e.g. one-hand abacus, mental arithmetics, 3G abacus, Kumon, etc) is because they are using two hand abacus. It claimed supposed to faster than other abacus method.
The channel U or 8 interviewed a child from CMA who attended twice a week class for one year can actually mental calculate the total amount when he was shopping with mummy. The result was exactly the same as what cashier calculated.
To achieve this or not, it is not the point. My main goal is to stimulate the child whole brain when they are young, especially they are not loaded with a lot of home work yet. Just like playing piano using two hand, both left and right brain will be exercised.
At the same time, a study routine, good focus and concentration can be established when they practice at home (e.g. listening CD read out question, the child mental sum and write down the no. with specific time range). Also the exam skill can be trained during the process. e.g. If my dd can’t hear or figure out one question, I told her to skip that question and focus on the next one instead of wasting time on previous unsure question.
The cost is 220 for 10 lessens (once a week), $160/10 lesson (twice a week). If there is a existing member can refer your child, you will get 8% discount. One good thing is parents are not charged for the class fall on public holiday. Because the lessen is on individual pace rather than group, so you can postpone your class if the child is sick or on holiday. -

Since phantom started this thread, I just gave my frank feedback. I have no relation and no intention to market for cma, just telling the parents who like the two hand abacus method that they can enjoy discount, little but better than nothing.

Oh, you misread me. I was just hoping that you can be the proxy for our KSPs to try out CMA and get that 8% discount. You member right? -
