I am planning to send my sons (5 & 6 years) to CMA Punggol. Can anyone help in answering the following qs:

      * What are the pros and cons by sending both at the sme time?

      * Any discount for sending 2 kids at the same time?

      * Which teacher is better? btw, can we choose a teacher?

      * I enrolled my sons in SKCC Abacus - Chinese Basic Module but it keeps posponing, what is your view on classes organized by CC as compared to CMA.

      Thanks a lot,

      Confused Mom :thankyou:

As both your kids are quite close in age gap, I think it should be ok to send both in the same class at the same time. Save effort and travel time together. Can also motivate and do both homework together. Cons will be both may end up distracting each other.

There is discount for sibling, but to enjoy 1st time discount, need existing member referral. Please refer to my PM for details. Note, need to provide details before register else no discount.

You can choose teachers but you need to know timing and teacher for beginner's class (usually limited choice). Suggest you talk to centre about trial lesson.

CMA syllabus is more robust and kid-friendly compared with some other abacus classes (I compare with my other kid's who used to attend another centre). CMA is also based on individual pace, and kids progress at own pace with teacher teaching each kid individually in class. Kids who are faster can progress to intermediate class anytime, and does not need to \"wait\" for others, and intermediate class is always on. Some CC abacus class has issues with continuity as it progresses, due to drop-outs over time and they conduct lesson for whole class.

          Hope this helps

              Hi,

CMA will assess for suitability of kids below 5 years old. Usually, their advice is kid will need to be able to write numbers, and know numbers from 1-10 or more. I personally think it is easier if kid is 4+ or 5+ years old, and the kid should know the order of numbers, able to recognise numbers from 1-50 or 100 and maybe do simple addition / subtraction up to 10 before you start.

There is a time for everything. Starting too early when the kid is not ready may not be beneficial to them. In fact, it may even deter the progress later due to their perception / attitude towards formal learning. CMA, though their materials are more kid-friendly, is still some form of more formal learning. When kids are younger than 4 years old, they should learn concepts through play instead. Just my personal opinion.

Btw, CMA does have a class for nursey / pre-nusery kids. Again, I personally do not see the need for this type of class as I believe parents can teach themselves. You may find some discussion or opinion on this type of class in earlier post in this thread.

Why don't you approach CMA for an assessment? Formal abacus class is 1.5hours, so not sure if your 3-year-old kid can last the lesson. CMA may recommend nursery class. Please see my personal opinion above on what the kid should know in addition to writing 1-10: I think 4+ or 5+ to start abacus lesson is more appropriate, but again, it is really up to you to decide.

                      hi wan2bdad,

                      Pen88n advice is right!

my opinion: 3 yrs old is young. normally, kids start abacus at K1 or K2. however if want to start child at Nursery N2, earliest age is 3.6 - 4 yrs old, where child slightly more mature.

3 yrs old is too young.
