Literacy Circle - Discussion

Hi Dinah...
as per your queries:
1. Do they provide an all-rounder English enrichment course aimed at building good foundation?
My son was given a workbook and there are like exercises for us to go through with him. For the liftoff workbook, there is like a comprehensive passage, and Q&A questions. There is also spelling every week and i find that helps as they learn to spell common words in the english language.
2. Are they structured in terms of their teaching?
There is a workbook they can bring back for revision and for parents to go through. initially i feel that the pace is rather slow (only like 2-3 pages of exercise per weeK), but then when i realise that they prob need time to really build up a child's confidence to read and they also took into consideration that too much at one go with not work also.
3. What is the student-teacher ratio? And who are the teachers?
My son's class has only like 5 kids altogether (prob cos i chose a weekday class). My son's teacher is an australian and very friendly too!
4. Is there any huge disparity in terms of teacher and general teaching quality between LCentral Jurong East vs Bt Timah branch?
Sorry, i'm not sure as i didn't go to the Bt Timah branch.
just to share my experience, my boy was in phonics class in his childcare for several years now, (since he was in N2, he's in K2 this year). the most he could do is make the sound of the letter of every word and he cannot join sounds together, thus I knew i got to do something else when he goes P1 he will be lost. He started class in January, it has been 1.5 months and since then, he is able to read short passages from his workbook. There is spelling every week and the spelling is helpful also as they learn to spell (and thus remember) common words in the english language. So far, i'm happy with his progress and I would like to sign him up for the next term as well...
At least he no longer fears to read, previously he will whine with I ask him to read short passages...

Hi Carrotree,Hi Titank,
My child is in K2, attending liftoff programme. from what i gathered there is no free trial, but they do have assessment session whereby they can advice which programme to place your child. Was actually looking at I can read and L central, and I find both programmes similar. What made me choose L central is that per term, a) they are cheaper (about $50 lesser per term as compared to I can read) b) I liked the environment at the JE branch and c) i read on-line in a forum page (perhaps this one?) that their programmes more aligned to MOE's.
As for the referral programme, if i introduce someone to the programme, both of us will receive a $30 voucher for your next term's fees (cannnot be used to deduct first term's fees). For month of feb, they have CNY promotion, which is when your child enrolls in month of Feb, we will both receive 2 vouchers of $30 off each (total value of $60).
Like that maybe wait until I had arrange an assessment with the LCentral at Jurong East then see whether I can enroll? There is no free trial? Maybe I should try my luck then.
Would update you if I decided to signup with L-Central then both of us win win situation. -
Ok Titank

Hello
I notice you mention LCentral Bukit Timah. I dun have experience of Jurong branch but I enrol my dd in LCentral BT.
The teacher is very nice! Think all teacher native English speakers and my dd really enjoy the lesson. I am impress with the materiel and feel it is relevent to the MOE school syllabus.
You can take ur child to any centre for the assessment then see first if you like the teacher etc.

my boy has been with LCentral for about a year. He loves it. He is at Thomson branch. So if you want to sign up thru referral, you can pm me too.

Hi All,
Can anyone share with their experiences at L Central? Heard that native speakers seem to be very friendly comes to teaching where not in a very academic pace.
Heard some rumours that the children like pulling the skirt & shirt of the teachers while having lessons.
This is like something when we have an Asian Lecturer or Ang Moh Lecturer during our uni days when thier teaching method is totally different style. -
Hi Titank
When you say \"pulling the shirt or skirt of the teachers\" - do you mean this figuartively? I have not heard this expresion?
Actually, the reason I sign my dd up to LCentral is because the teacher explain me that the style of teaching does differ from other tuition centre because the children are more involved. It is not a case of putting their head down and doing worksheet after worksheet (the teacher mention you can go buy books from Popular to do that!) but rather teach the children techniques. How to answer compre/compo and MCQ question and also focus on the oral exam. The workbook also has many other ex.
The teacher (at BT at least) is very friendly and my dd, the shy type, loves the class because she can talk and ask question etc.
Furthermore, the materiel is aligned to MOE so it does ensure they get the practise. BC (where my dd went before) serves a purpose but it is more leaning toward English enrichment...not practising the SG syllabus.
Your criteris may be diffrent to me but after asessment I was very convinced that this is the place for my dd because of the teaching style and the materiel.

My P2 girl attends the class at Bukit Timah. There is only one full time teacher from South Africa but educated in London. She is very nice and my girl enjous her class very much.
The good thing about BT is that it is relatively new and I could choose my preferred timing on a weekday. Mondays are not popular and my girl has been the only student in the class since school started in Jan. Am happy with the undivided attention.
I find the teaching very structured and imparts learning technique e.g. how to approach a cloze passage. Am definitely happy with it! -
Hi Engkidz, Trina,
Thanks for your inputs, they are so assuring, as previously, when I chose LC over ICR, it was also because i had wanted something more aligned with MOE's teachings so that at least the enrichment will help in their school work..
hopefully, through the small class sizes, our kids can benefit as they have more attention from the teachers

Agreed Carrotree.
Anyone else have feedback I would be happy to know.
