      yewteemum:
better to check with school if need to bring the child for orientation.

my neighbour (whose gal is gng to same sch as mine next yr), says she asked if can dun bring kid cos her gal has music lesson on the O day, but the staff says need to bring as there's a \"small test\"...

talked to my gal's kindy classmate's mummy (gal also gng same sch next yr) and she also says she called the sch to check (as they'll be gng on holiday), the staff told her need to sit for a test. if not in SIN on the O day, can take the test upon return. and it's MOE requirement / the results need to be submitted to MOE kind of thing...
      Hi,
Setting \"small tests\" for orientation day is not a MOE requirement. Not all schools set tests for their students on orientation day. It's all at the schs' discretion. There are some schs which band their students according to abilities after these \"small tests' but most schs stream their students after P1 or P2.
Good luck to your DD with her placement test. :celebrate:

        sleepy:
No test for my dd's school. The school doesn't believe in streaming, not until P5. Even at P5, just subject banding (don't know what's that yet) no top 2 classes kind of thingy

        Hi sleepy,
WOW!! Your child's sch only stream in P5? Maybe the sch doesn't want to stress the kids. πŸ˜„

Subject banding is just allocating pupils of the same ability into one class for that particular subject.

on the MOE requirement thingy, i heard from the mummy..

personally i'm not so worried abt the \"test\" cos last yr i've alr heard another sch (out of the 4 nearby neighbourhood schools) has the \"test system\". maybe they just want to find out the average std of the kids for this yr.

had a brief talked with the principal on reg day, and was told they'll be streamed based on Maths by Pri xx (i forgot :P)

My son's school streams at the end of P1. At the end of P2, streams based on subject banding. He has CA1/SA1 and SA2 since lower primary. I'm used to hearing words like streaming liao. πŸ˜‰

I prefer streaming, the sooner the better. Children of similar abilities can be grouped together. Way easier for teachers to teach. More reassuring for parents too. High ability students can do more challenging sums, less bored in class. Weaker students can concentrate on building foundations, instead of struggling to catch up & feeling demoralised. If the class has wide variation, very hard for teachers to coach, 一倴不着岸

Perhaps it's bcos my son has been streamed from lower primary, I'm used to it and feel that it's not a bad idea after all. If my son wants to go to the top classes, he will be motivated to work hard. In the meantime, I'm still waiting for that day to come.
