      HI All

Need help to solve the following problem

which one of the folloswing no, when added to 3178 will allow regrouping of the ones and hundreds ?

      1) 6732
      2) 6597
      3) 5914
      4) 5832

Thank you so much :celebrate: :celebrate:
regrouping means the addition of 2 digits must be more than 10
all the ones in the 4 choices allowing regrouping
now, for option 1, the hundreds digit ie 7 and 1 when adding 6732 and 3178, doesnt allow for regrouping as 7+1+the ten carried forward when adding the tens in the two numbers, is only 9.

if u work thru, the answer shd be no. 3 i think (ie regrouping only ones and hundreds), as for no. 4 must regroup the tens as well as ones and hundreds

        Hi all,

I was running through my child's paper and I am actually stuck in 2 questions. Do you guys have any advice? Which method should I use, I thought of using LCM, but apparently I dont think it works on these questions
        http://postimage.org/image/2qv68wubo/

        http://postimage.org/image/2qvq3d090/

        How about branching method?

just curious, whch sch is this paper from? my child not yet p4, so i m amazed at that kind of question difficulty.
duno abt lcm, but if using logic, wld be like this:
        first stop: 5
2nd stop: 5-3 (cant +5 as that will be 10)

        so, 5-3+5-3+5-3+5=11
7 stops. not sure if correct

          Hi concernParent777

LCM is covered in secondary one.

For P4, a student may use a heuristics called ‘Making a systematic list” to get the answer for Q1.Make a tabulated list and you should be able to get the answer.

          Or, use logical reasoning

          11= 5+6 = 5+2+2+2

Every interval of two stops will increase the number of passengers by 2, so you’ll have 3 intervals making a total of 6 stops. Add 6 to 1. You’ll have 7 stops.

Another way to look at it.

          11 = 5 + 6
          6 = 15 – 9, therefore you’ll have 3 stops where 5 passengers are picked up and 3 stops where 3 passengers are let off. Add 6 to 1. You’ll have 7 stops.

I believe you’ll be able to solve Q2 now.

          Best wishes

              Hi 24hr-mum

              Good Morning

To begin with, I am no maths genius.

I am a victim of circumstances.

As you know, tutors offering training on maths heuristics do not come cheap. My pockets are not deep enough to send my kid for such courses. Therefore, I spent some time with my kid during the last quarter of P5 and PSLE year with his maths.

I’ve mentioned this quite a number of times, in open forum as well as private messages about the books I used to learn MD.

The Essential Parents' Guide to Primary Maths by Dr Fong Ho Keong
Top marks by Dr Fong Ho Keong
Solving Challenging Mathematical Problems The Heuristics Approach by Dr Fong Ho Keong
Maths Model Diagrams from Maths456 by Tan BM
Challenging Maths Made Easy by Ammiel Wan (useful for upper primary)

I bought some of these books in 2004/2005, therefore, now ,some may not be available in the stores.

You may also look at some of these newer books in Popular to see if they meet your needs.

The Singapore Model Method for Learning Mathematics by EPB Panpac Education.
Bar Modeling A Problem-solving Tool from Marshall Cavendish.

Recently,I saw a new series on Visible Thinking in Mathematics by Ammiel Wan and other authors in Popular.

I can’t tell you much about assessment books as we relied mainly on homework given by the school and past years papers to practise. Some of the websites offering free past years papers.

Well, this is a poor dad way of doing PSLE Maths.

If one has the financial muscles, there is no lack of training centres/tutors offering maths heuristics courses.

Enjoy the maths journey with your kid.

              Happy New Year.

              Best wishes

                  Hi

When life gives one a kick, what should one do?
What should one do when you have a kid who is willing to learn?

I strongly believe the starting point to learn is from the schools, the kids should learn as much as possible in their schools.

My role is not to teach him anything new, but to discuss with him and help to breakdown those difficult questions into simpler steps using stuff learned from his school.

As this is the KSP forum, do Maths the KS way.

                  Keep (in) Syllabus.
                  Keep (it) Simple
                  Keep (it) Short.

You may use \"Make a Supposition\" or \"Guess and Check\" to solve chickn n legs types of questions.

Enjoy your Maths journey with your kid.

                  Best wishes.

PS ---The parent who is stronger in the subject should do that particular subject.

Start with daily small task for your child.

This is what i did with my child:

                      Maths,
                      3-4 problem sums a day.

English:I know that a child's weak point is usually Vocab cloze or Comprehsion O/E thus every day I alternated between them.

This makes marking easire after a had days work and also constant emphasize on these 3 areas of weakness will be more helpful.

If u need skills on how to teach problem solving skill or Vocab Cloze and compre, I am most willing to try my best to assit.

It does not mean that doing tonnes of Pract. papers daily or pages upon pages of Asst books going to help much. Diagnostic teaching is most helpful in my many years as a teacher

                      Target a child's weakness only

Try it, you will have a happy child and mum.

Just to let u know how effective it has been for my child, she seldom looses more than 4 marks for any of her problem sums since P1-P5.

She is also doing well in the two areas for English which in PSLE is one of the areas of weakness.

Hope I have been of help

thanks. do u mean eg if i buy an asst bk, just get the child to do questions that the child will be weak at, and hence leace some pages undone? will be it wasteful of the bk? (i supp waste the bk better than waste time?) or do u compile own set of challenging questions?

do u send ur child for tuition or self teach? even for subjeccts such as eng / ch compo, and science and heuristics math?
