      Hi Mummies,
For those who decided to enrol their kids to Soka, pls share what good abt this sch?
Cos I cun decide whether to enrol my girl for K1 next year. Heard their teaching methods are project based different from other sch (eg St Hilda's Kindergarten) and no spelling at all . Thus don know the kids are well prepared to primary 1?
Pls advise me to make decision.
      Thks.

        Hi,

        Anybody going for Orientation tomorrow?

Any idea how may sets of uniform is required? I only read that there are 2 non-pe attire days, is it necessary to buy 3 sets of PE attire and 2 sets of Uniforms?( that will be for the whole week)

        Thank in advance!

Orientation for nursey classes only? Or even for K1 and K2 classes too?

For new students including K1 & 2 new students…anyway Orientation is over and gosh, Soka is very well organised. So exciting to see DD going there. I am sure she is going to enjoy the curriculum.

My gal enjoyed her nursery class so much that she don't want to move to K1 😓

Hello, mummies! I am pondering which school to send my boy (K1 for 2013). Thanks for the comments on Soka and anyone know whether there is still some vacancy for K1 in 2013? Soka's method seems to be quite project based and anyone knows their academic aspect (K1&K2 to prepare for P1 academics, for example) Thanks.

Personally we found they are good at letting the child to learn social values and project based through open discussion. Each project initiation & execution is based on the children inputs & discussion. There is a sense of ownership from the child based on what we have observed

No homework, except for school holidays projects, and no drilling. So this not suitable if you are looking for academic driven school

You may call them to check out more

I agree, this is a EQ driven school rather than IQ driven school. If you want your kid to do well in an academic driven school, never ever put your kid in Soka Kindergarten.

There is no spelling which is essential for reading, no chinese spelling, no Hanyu Pinyin. I had even suggested to the principal and the reply I was given was that they do not stress the kids.

Out of the 3 hrs curriculum, there is very little studies. The only thing came out good for my child in this school was that the chinese teacher was very encouraging.

Their curriculum does keep in line with MOE guidelines, so i guess the kids are prepared for P1.

I was struggling with the academics aspect as well before i enrolled my girl, however after just 1 term, i am glad i have made the right decision as learning is lifelong, social aspects and character building is important for the long term.

This is what I have observed so far

In term of academic, they are not so deep into it. But they do teach basic that is required in P1, at least for the 1st 2 terms.

The downside is that they don’t drill the child in learn Chinese or English spelling every week. But they do expose them to reading. So we do our part in teaching the academic portion

What i like is their project-centric learning. Every time they will let the children pick a theme/subject and they learn from it. I am surprised when my child come back and start to talk to me all those general knowledge and science facts that they have learnt in these projects. I believe this is their way to impart the children the love of learning. I find this is important be cause once the child generate an interest in learning, which is the fundamental, they can pick up any subjects.

My child now starts to talk about teamwork and team leader when we play at home. Guess this is learnt through the project process.

When come to K2, the "homework" starts to get heavy. Every alternative week we have an English and then Chinese homework. For English, we got to find an article from the newspaper, together with the child summarise the key points, get the child to write simple sentences on the jotter book. They will have to do show and tell their chosen article. Guess this is to train their presentation skill. For Chinese, they will have to bring a Chinese story book home, parent & child read together and the child can write simple words found in the book or to draw something related in the story book. No fixed structure, just to generate the child interest in Chinese. Now every week we also have a simple Maths worksheet to do.

Think they don’t want to drill and stress the child so much in such a young age. There is no lack of stress come pri one. Most importantly is not to kill the child interest in those subjects. So I am not sure if this is the correct way. Some children may handle the drilling well while some may not. At least I am happy to see my child come home happy everyday
