DSA 2012

We are looking at band. Appreciate the advice of forumners whose kids used this route as well.
Don't think so. Best thing to do is to go to the websites of the schools you're interested in and check there. Straight from the horse's mouth. You can also check some of the threads here and see if anyone's posted relevant info. Which aesthetics domain is your child interested in? There are some forummers here who might be able to advise you.MMM:
We are planning DSA via asthetics route.
Is there a website that shows a summary of the asthetics CCA that is wanted for DSA by each school? -

Agree with jtoh. And for some schools, they require the kids to sit for general ability or some other form of tests as first cut. Think of the statistics. These schools receive hundreds to thousands of applications. If your kid does not do well in these first screening tests, I doubt the school is going to look at your kid's portfolio. They can't be poring over thousands of files to sieve out who is head prefect or who wins EAGLE awards etc. Clear the tests and maybe (we hope) then they pull out your files to take a look. Fail their test and your beautiful file of efforts probably end up in their store or worse on way for destruction. Some have DSA of a few rounds and perhaps only in last round then they take out your file! So pls do not waste too much efforts creating a too fanciful portfolio. The more efforts you put in, the higher the expectations and the greater the disappointment when rejected.
Hi Intermezzo,
I agree that the applicants should read what is required by the schools and submit accordingly. It doesn't always help to add many photos, bulky portolios, bound copies with fancy decorations etc when all the school asks for are documents. I have friends whose children applied through various domains to different schools, some with just plain paper and information listed, supported by certificates, others with fancy fully done-up portfolios professionally bound together laden with photos and glitter. Trust me, it's your qualifications and certificates that count. Not all the 'noisy prettiness' you're trying to impress the panel with because you don't have enough qualifications. -
A suggestion for MOE or sec schools offering DSA - please conduct all the GATs or first screening tests earlier eg a few days after open house before June holidays. Students just register and sit for these tests. The sec schools do not need to see school results or portfolios at this stage. The schools will then screen those who clear their tests then send letters or emails to the shortlisted kids to send in their portfolios within 2 weeks or so.
Currently, certain popular schools receive thousands of applications and reject more than three quarters (3/4) of applicants anyway. Each portfolio has a stack of papers. Paper wastage also occurs during process of preparation - in quest for perfection, we may have reprinted some pages and throw away paper when preparing portfolio. Imagine how much paper is wasted in the whole process. Worse thing, after DSA, what do they do to the portfolios… Throw away perhaps after x period of time. So for the whole DSA exercise for all schools combined, we are talking about thousands of files of thick papers being destroyed and perhaps some or most not even reviewed at all!
Save the trees plus the schools no need to have admin headache receiving so many files plus don’t waste parents/kids’ precious time in preparation of portfolio, if the schools or MOE review the process. -
Would appreciate if anyone of you can give me some advice.
If your DD is able to get into any of the top girl schools via DSA, will you take up the chance or just go through the normal route via PSLE results. If you take up via DSA, which school will you choose?
Thank You very much. -

Obviously take up the chance of DSA. As for which school, each student and her parents will have their own preference.Would appreciate if anyone of you can give me some advice.

Does getting a platinum in SMOPS gaurantee a CO in HCI? Let’s say if a child gets platinum in SMOPS but overall school result only average, let’s say 75-79% for GEP student. What is the chance of getting a CO?

Of course will accept if the school is my DD's 1st choice school. If it's not, then will be a bit difficult to decide.Would appreciate if anyone of you can give me some advice.

GEP + smops platinum = HCI DSA CO is quite certain -

Also depends on what DSA route that is. If it's through sports/CCA or a specific academic discipline, the child needs to be sure she is willing to pursue that for the next 6 yrs. If there are any doubts, I would advise against it. Entering through PSLE means that the student try for a different sport/CCA if she wants, and can decide not to take part in certain competitions/training etc.[/quote]any academic discipline for DSA will be no difference once admitted into the school, esp for RGS / NYGH / RI / HCI

even for those sports DSA students, if their PSLE t-score is reasonably high, they will still be blended into the standard class
