DSA 2012
-
There are many schools offering DSA. I was referring to schools which take in a high number of GE students. I am not contesting the fact that the GE students have to get into a secondary school which can provide them a similar env. What I am saying is that the schools should project a maximum intake for mainstream students. For mainstream academics, the number is quite small every yr.

Funny thing is that there are only abt 500 GEP and many DSA schools. If HCI and RI takes about half the GEP cohort, there will still be alot of vacancy available in the other DSA schools, right? -

Just hate to point out the reality, ie, it's not a DSA issue but rather the parents' attitude issue. If everyone believes there are only 4 good schools in SG, then of course the fight will be tough lah! While the parents want branded schools, the branded schools also want branded students mah.

Anyway, do they really set a figure for the no. of GEP to take in or it just happened that the GEP performed better than the rest for the selection and/or interview? :scratchhead: I'm out of touch.
And one question...which are the IP schools that give 'concession' to GEPpers...eg, can skip GAT/HAST/tests etc? -

GEP students are exempted from GAT in most cases. They dont compete with non GEP students for DSA. I am just asking for more transparency in the maximum number of vacancies for the mainstream categories -

I agree that the schools can do anything they like since they have the right, and that there are plenty of DSA places in many schools. I just wish the schools would be a little more open about the numbers, or at least give a breakdown of previous years' intakes under different categories so applicants have a better idea of their chances.[/quote]

I think if parents want to know more, they can check with respective school that they are interested.
I am not sure about other school. The school that I asked, teacher-in-charge explained to me about estimate number allocated for different categories, and he clearly mention to me that they are not filling the place and they are recuriting talented ( academic/ sport/ music/ ect) student. He tried to say is that less people doesn't mean that you will get it.

I personally feel that way too. For the new IP schools like VS, Cedar, SNGS, CHS - they are all doing DSA that way. 2 main domains - DSA for IP and DSA for Sports.[
I feel that academic DSA should be removed since they will be admitted by PSLE. DSA should only be for arts and sports in mainstream schools.
Er....what is DSA IP???!!!!! Those who good overall academically and qualify for IP, nothing special right? THey would qualify via PSLE anyway. DSA should be for those who have special talents lah.
So if the child is talented in only 1 or 2 subject(s) but not overall academically - I think they can be recognised if they are given a domain to apply for and benefit the school too. They might not be strong overall academically based on their special talents in only 1 or 2 subjects and might not even qualify for that school's \"DSA IP\" domain as such.
For instance the case of my ds' classmate, if RI had done their DSA as the new \"IP schools\" are doing this year with domain as \"DSA-IP\", my ds' classmate would never have gotten into RI. He's not good \"overall\" in his academics. He probably doesn't have 80%. But he is exceptional (outstandingly so too) in 1 subject and quite good in another. He's poor in the other 2 subjects. His PSLE score would not have qualified him for RI, but he did get a DSA offer for the subject domain he applied under. He was 1 of the only 2 of the pri school's mainstream students who got DSA offer from RI.
So I think the new IP schools should rethink their DSA domains.
Of course there are special talents in other areas, but I'm not going into that. -
perhaps some schools donch want just exam-smart kids so they can devise their own test and see how much knowledge the kids have that is beyond the classroom.

I guess you were lucky then. I called the admission office and was not given any numbers. I understand that vacancies dont have to be filled up and if they find more talented students, they may offer more COs. if they were able to let me know the previous yr numbers, it would have been useful. Nevertheless, my dd enjoyed the DSA experience.slmkhoo:

Academic DSAs are applicable for those who are talented in one particular subject but average on others e.g. a maths genius but average on languages. His or her t-score may not be high.
