Whoops! -
Hi
My DD1 will be joing CGS next year. Appreciate if anyone who have kids there can share with me what to expect (eg. CCA, pace of studies, teachers, etc). Sorry to being so sotong, but may I ask if we need to buy many textbooks or does the school have its own notes for the students?
May I ask also ask if there is a school bus service? We live in Jurong.
Thanks! -
The stress that your daughter will encounter depends on the type of CCA she decides to join. I know for a fact that the Uniformed Groups have the longest CCA hours, but they garner the most CCA points for the LEAPS Grading Scheme. The sport CCAs in Crescent can be tough and tiring (I've had experience in this segment before I quit) if your daughter does not have an adequate stamina to begin with. If she is really into sports, my suggestion for her is to join Softball; competitions occur the most frequently in that sport. The Club & Society CCAs are more slack, usually it would only be once a week, unlike the other two where training schedules can even cut into weekends.
Your daughter would be informed of the individual details for each CCA soon enough, there will be a CCA Open House in the first or second week of school. With regards to the pace of studies, it depends on her so I am unable to predict. I, for one, personally feel that Crescent reserves all its better teachers for the higher secondary students and that is one of the reasons why the school is able to produce such satisfying results.
The quality of teachers for the lower secondary students has improved over the few years, I have to say. If your daughter is lucky she might be able to get a teacher who mainly educates the Secondary Threes and Fours, like how I managed to when I was her age; but then again in every school, there is always a fair share of good and bad teachers, so who am I to judge?
The discipline in the school is rather strict, there was a new rule enforced this year which stated that there would be spot-checks (the Discipline Mistress jokingly referred to these as 'eyeball checks') twice every week. However, I am not sure about the sturdiness of the said rule, it might be altered next year.
You will receive the book list and be informed of the textbooks which you are required to purchase, don't worry. Crescent is pretty well known for producing excellent notes for its students (especially for the higher secondary students) and I have to agree with this. The notes are usually in soft-copy, but that will not be a problem since your daughter will be presented with her own Fujitsu laptop in late January. She can choose to print the notes out on paper while the teachers goes through them in class (like some of my friends did) or simply carry her tablet to school and browse the contents from it.
Yes, there is a school bus service available. I do not take it though, so I'm sorry to say that I am unable to provide more information than that. If this helps, you could call the General Office in Crescent to inquire them on this matter. This is their number: 64758711 (extracted from my student handbook!)
I'd like to offer my congratulations for your daughter for making it into Crescent! I hope her life would be fruitful in there, as was mine. I'll be her senior next year.
Hope I helped! -
Hi Nerd In Disguise
Thank you so much for the really useful information :thankyou: -
Hi Nerd in Disguise,
May I know if the Tablet PC is heavily used in classroom discussion? Daily?
There are still textbks, how often use?
Tks! -
Hello Crester.

It depends, but yes; it is used rather frequently.
The school produces its own notes (usually in Microsoft Word/Powerpoint/Excel) and those soft-copy notes are more often used than the textbooks. The textbooks, in reality, contain limited information and hence the school has to create its own notes for the students.
Don't worry, some pupils prefer to bring their textbook(s) and a stack of foolscap to jot down their own notes during class. It's simply a matter of preference! -
@softcoach: Donโt mention it!

Hi Nerd In Disguise,
Wow ,u mean Crescentโs teachers will produce their own notes in Microsoft Word etc! They will burn them into Soft-Copies too! Good job CGS teachers.
QUES:these soft copies will be made given to all pupils?
:are all examable subjects e.g Chinese,Eng Lit etc taught using such
Learning Tools?
Thanks so much for answering my queries. -
Yes, yes they will.
Of course. The teachers will either send the said documents out via the school email or portal, where students can download them as attachments.
On a whole, yes. There's a reason why Crescent is labelled as one of the FutureSchools@Singapore, you know.
Sure thing. Your questions are so cute & 'kiasu'. ^3^
