ANobleNerd:
I'm so sorry everyone, I haven't been in the forum for some time.Hi Dovetail,

Congrats ANobleNerd! Your son will have a very different growing up experience as a student-athlete. It'll take you a while to understand and appreciate the system, as you will most probably keep comparing it with the mill of the mainstream. I did. It will all make sense after awhile.
Your son will be sheltered from the frenzy of the mill. There is a lot of character building on in the school. The boarding system helps the school to do this. I must say, the boarding has been very good for my boy. At 14, he's able to pack for every oversea trip he has to make all by himself. He washes his own jerseys and plan his own laundry. I see him blossomed form a bochap boy to a responsible, independent one. I am very thankful to Mrs Deborah Tan, the principal and Dr Seet, the sports director, for their love for the students. They indeed have a good philosophy in their mission of how they want to inculcate a holistic development in the teens.
All the best! -
sportyparent:
I know that there is alot of questions to answer but please help me. I dont want my child to go to the wrong school. thanks
Hello sportyparent,
It is wise that you ask your questions here as not many outside understand what a student-athlete life is all about and tend to mislead parents to think that it is all about play and not much study. 1st of all, I must qualify that the school gives its best just like any others but it depends on how our child engage himself with the system. Some do make a mess of it and were kicked out. That's the good thing about SSP, if you have any disciplinary problem, you'll be kicked out to mainstream. So what's left behind are the okay ones:).
Security:
The security of the school is fine. The boarding is like a condo with security guards 24hours. Even parents cannot enter. The principal and director and many staff stay with the kids. Don't be alarmed by news like the one that was posted in this thread. Like the Chinese said, \"Big tree catches the wind\", if you know what I mean.
Boarding:
This is something that is only offered in SSP in Singapore for local kid's. It is a cornerstone of their character building program. The students have to manage their own room and laundry. They are divided into Houses. The have exciting high and low key activities for them though the year. The students always have a wonderful time bonding through living together.
Coping:
Student-athletes are naturally time poor. They are have to learn to cope. It's something they know they have to do for the love of their sports. My son is coping very well but I must say he is well discipline. After the mandatory self-study time every night, he continues his schoolwork after
10pm till midnight sometime when there are module tests. Weekends, there are projects and homework. He enjoys the regimentation and is working hard because he feels cherished by the school.
PE:
This one is called SportsSmartSkill. It's a very good program to let the students try out many different types of sports. They even do dances.
You'll be surprise how all these skills actually take away their inhibitions and make them more confident. No need to go to Adam Khoo:)
Subjects:
I can't really give you an exact picture as you know, the school has an inclusive philosophy so they have multi-track system. They have various through-train program. Mine is doing IB, doing Pure Physics, Pure Chem,
Language Arts (Combi of Eng and Lit), Chinese, Geo, Social Studies, Math and Add Math. This is in prep to dovetail into the IBDP.
Anyway, for my family, we are very happy with SSP. It is one school where
we feel our child is well taken care of academically, emotionally, physically and mentally. It has proven so as we see him blossom.
Let your child decide, he is the one to walk the journey. Parents don't
always know best. The future is never certain. Let them make their own dots to connect. It will be more meaningful for their life. -

Don't buy calculator first. I think you can use old one. I heard the Sharp version not so good. The Casio they use in Pri Sch is better. I think dictionary is just a recommendation, can save money and use your old one. BTW, I haven't looked at my son's booklist. Is the bookstore Pacific? Their books very expensive. Cheaper to get from Popular. -
Dovetail, thanks so much for your insights to the school.
We're very happy that our son has made it to the school and we hope he'll really use this opportunity to gain independence and confidence, even as he works on his passion for fencing. -
Hi Dovetail,
how do we know whether my DD will be in the IB programme or not? We have done the registration. Will it be made known on posting day? Thanks -
The IB programme only begins in Sec 3. Prior to that, the kids with PSLE aggregate of 230 and above are put on a pre-IB curriculum. Those who do consistently well in the Express stream will also be given an option at Sec 3 to do the pre-IB curriculum.
In Lower Sec, the Pre-IB track is also known as the Honours Curriculum.

Right on ANobleNerd.
It is easier to stay in the Honours class than to get in even if you do well in the express later.
You mummies stock up tissue paper in Jan12. Don’t know about you, but I missed my son a lot the 1st few weeks, shed quite abit of tears. Hubby got to keep comforting me. -

No idea. Usually 100 only per year but perhaps not so in the earlier years. 2012 year is 125 as 2 new academies are added, shooting and fencing. -
Anyone who has a list of student’s schedule/timetable of Singapore Sports School? From the time they wake up to the sleeping time? Thanks!
-
The time-table is embedded in this video about boarding at SSP:

May I know for reporting to posted school tomorrow, do I need to queue up with the rest to get the LOA signed? Can I skip the queue

Fandi Ahmad’s son also in SSP. Saw his wife there today.

This is his second son? -
A few parents and I are tailoring our sons’ uniform berms bec the ones from school are really too long for our kids to wear. They come about 4 inches below the knee, and the width of the leg-hole is so large, it looks like culottes!
I can’t imagine how the shorter boys can possibly wear this… the in-seam is so long, it reaches the boys’ knees. The only thing that fits is the waist.
Apparently the uniform supplier has kept the length the same for all the sizes, but only changed the width - have you ever heard such a ridiculous thing??? -
My DD’s skote both XL but different length by 1 to 2 inches! Going to bring it to change on Wed. Really very bad. May I know who or where you going to tIlor? What about the school logo?
-
Beauty World Plaza, B1-03. There is a school uniform tailor there who does it, and has the means of putting in the badge on the berms.
