The grade 4s this year is doing a new syllabus I heard. They are the first batch doing it..

No, all ballet exam grades are now under the new syllabus. Tougher for the Grade 4 as they are the last batch to take Grade 3 under the old syllabus.

can i ask, why grade 1 need the ribbon strap? and they will be wearing black shoes?

Yes, the elastic ribbon is to be worn as a belt over their leotard. I guess is to make the little girls more elegant with a waistline πŸ™‚ Grade 1 and 2 is the low-heels black shoes (and the character dress with ribbon trimmings) for their character dance, and the normal pink ballet shoes otherwise.

This is used in their character dance. Take a look at the below video and you will understand. Some teachers uses scarves to teach, others use sticks with ribbons tied at the end. Yes, both ballet and character dance during the exams.

Correction. Those who took the grade 4 earlier this year will be the toughest lot as they will be doing the new grade 5 (in fact they did the new grade 3 the year before last, then old grade 4 last year). Some I heard will not be sending their girls next year for the exam as it is a huge jump. e.g. from 1/4 pirouette turn to 1 full turn both sides, petit allegro is much tougher etc. My girl who has learned the old grade 4 and 5 last year as she goes to 2 schools, said that the new grade 5 is definitely tougher and requires a very strong foundation and the girls to have good ballet vocabulary or the teaching process will be slowed down.

That was one of my favourite videos for character dance! I used to play and watch it together with my girl when she had her character dance exam. In fact, I prefer character dance to the classical ballet dance.

I saw my grade 5 gal doing the same stuff for her grade 5 exam. Is this the new or old syllabus? You can see that the moves are not easy..my girl said she has to suck in her stomach and hold her breathe at certain point so that she can balance better.

This is old syllabus. New one is very much like performance based.
