Suzuki Violin - Discussion

Is Ms Yah at Mandeville too? How is she like and her style of teaching? Thanks!

She was NAFA teacher many years back, now she is a private teacher. Her niece Helena Dawn (14) just left to Menuhin too. Janell Yeo (16) in US , Edward, winner of Young Violinist Competition are her students.

Hi luckystar,
Do you have her contact number? You can pm me too. I’m looking for a good teacher for my 6.5 year-old daughter who is currently learning Suzuki violin. Thanks!! -

Hihi,
My own tots to share...
I think it is great if parents understand the outline of lessons, participate actively and help during the daily practise at home. I am a private violin teacher and from my observation, the students who improve tremendously are the ones who have their parents guiding them, esp at the beginner stage (eg suzuki vol 1).
Nowadays, I would encourage the parents who can guide their children for their daily practise at home to actually pick up the violin and learn with their child. It is not formal lesson for the parents but instead I wanted parents to understand the violin techniques and not theoretically basis.
I strongly encourage sight reading. I would prefer them to be able to play independently and not relying on numbers etc. Sight reading is important if the student is intending to take ABRSM examinations. -
Hi all,
I’m also looking for a violin teacher for my 8 year old. We wanted him to have the flexibility of a home teacher and we’re not the "must-do-grade-8-by-10-year-old" type. It’s really to build up his musical education and would very much like him to enjoy the process rather than the cramp-school style which he is already "enjoying" in our education system.
He’s on and off on the Suzuki since 4 and already well into book 2.
Any recommendations would be much appreciated. BTW we live in Bishan.
Cheers! -

Hi, May I have Ms Yah contact no too? thank you soo much. -
I would like to address the Suzuki vs. Traditional violin question, as a traditionally trained musician who has taught Suzuki violin for the last 30 years.
When you are looking for a teacher for you child you would like to find one that:
-Can play their instrument on a professional level, so they can inspire your child
-Will provide private lessons, so the program can move at your child’s pace
-Will provide group lessons and/or ensemble experience, because peer motivation is a powerful thing
Teachers who have pursued Suzuki teacher training, although not required to call oneself a Suzuki teacher, will be more likely to be able handle very young students. There are many interpretations and implementations of the Suzuki method, but the most important element is the belief that all children can learn to play at a high level of ability, and that it is good for them to develop this ability.

Best Wishes,
Ruth Brons
