      Hi Young HL,
Stellar is a program which makes the children to read. only the way of teaching/precenting has changed. that is the \"theam\". thoes days the they teached according to a particular theam. now the theam is the story book. so go ahead buy the assesment books and revise. grammar is grammar. no body can change that πŸ˜‰
      haha.. thanks plum-cake.. πŸ˜‰

i personally dont like stellar and prefer the old way of teaching like what we had when we were young, becos at the end of the day they are still tested on basics like grammar rules and hving stellar, the unstructured way means that we parents hv to double up as teachers at home to do the structured (and boring) teaching and kids usu will whine to parents (some kids i mean) and also means tuition may be no choice for parents who are no gd in eng or who are wkg

          I agree with you TOTALLY !!! πŸ˜‰
This Stellar thing is just about making learning English fun. I like the idea of having a textbook to learn Grammar and Vocab the traditional way. It's more structured and I know what my daughter is learning like articles, tenses, modals etc.
I took out my son's P1 EL textbook to teach my gal according to the chapters and then use accompanying workbook to reinforce.

Frankly speaking, now that my gal is aldy in P3 - I am still a blur blur mum trying to understand this whole thing about \"Stellar Program\" :stupid: ...Maybe, I am abit late in \"exploring\" more about this program but then I gain many tips from reading the forum here and hence it helps me to \"2nd prepare\" for my another gal entering P1 next year

May I check - does your child has an overall view of what she will be learning for the term? I don't remembering seeing any from DD1's school. I chance upon this during my search in the web and find this is a typical one...

              Hi,

I Received similar chart from my school last year. I also worried in the first before she starts p1. now I am used to this. I felt same as kindergarten. Their they have theams but here they have story titles as theam.

Ex A butterfly is born by Melvin Berger. This is a story book title. they read the book in the class. Discuss about the life cycle of the butterfly. they share similar stories they studied/read in the past. like hungry catterpillar.. even they talk about the other life cycles, then they did work sheets like cloze, vocab, grammar( this time they brush up some p1 grammar and study further ex tense p1 simple present/ past then in p2 further present/ past continuous tense..) some adjectives.they did creative writing, spelling as well. even they have outdoor activity for each thame. I am not sure what they did for this topic. but I remember they played soap bubbles when they were doing the book bubble trouble.

I studied stuctured english. so I did worried in the first. after seeing all these activities. the kids are enjoying, similar to kindergarten but more work sheets I am pretty cofident now.

my time, I don't remember studying phonics. but I remember spellings.
Ex: When, Where, wheel, wheat, which, while through that we know the sound of \"wh\". I remember doing work books like \"english work book \" by Ronald Ridout. (couln't find anything for my dd ) But my daughter studied Phonice to read and spell ( I studied and taught her πŸ˜‰ ). Nowadays, I can see lots of enrichment centers for phonics.

I think there is nothing to worry, Just follow a good guide book (grammar)and continue teach them. Change can affect a person emotionally, physically or psychologically.Change is indeed both positive and negative; it can be unexpected and astonishing. so it will take time to accept new things.

Make an appointment and do talk to your class teacher. and find out whats really happening in the class. take a work sheet set with you. ask open ended Qs. let her talk first. she might give you some suggestions on how to teach them at home.

:imsorry: if I said anythig wrong.

              Thank you!

my girl is in much coveted top sch but nothing structured was given. no overview like wood grove. in fact i knew nothing abt wat was being taught unless my girl bothers to bring her worksheets back to sign and to file. even then, the grammar being covered is very unstructured n little.

the sad thing abt spore education system is we parents still hv to supplement or double up as teachers becos what was taught in sch and wat was tested can be vastly different esp for english. maybe the grammar has a bit of similarity but vocab wise it can really come out from anywhere out of the sun.

the stellar way is fun but very unstructured i find. some kids up to p3 still confuse between nouns, adjectives, verbs i believe.

                  Hi Plum-cake,
Thanks so much for your sharing; really appreciates :D.

Yes, I have e-mailed to the EL level head and is awaiting for her reply and also the appt date to meet her. As for DD class's teacher - due to there is a big \"chaos\" on the turnover of teacher so I am still do not know who is her \"present or soon to-be\" EL teacher :x Anyway, this is something that I have brought to the attention of the Principal so hopefully can hear the good new in Term 2 😎

Ye my girl did the book rev. in p1. but lighter version. meaning she has to write the title of the book, author, illustrator(if any), the charactor I liked most, the story type i.e. interesting, boring, informative, funny etc, etc.
then draw a picture. thats all. but not the newspaper journal.
