Serafiel:

She's a china scholar and took French as well, so she's \"trilingual\".
5 students with 8 Distinctions.
Correction: ~60 students got 8 Dists. HCI decided to profile just 5 that's all. Also, Mingming is NOT a PRC scholar (ie did not come to Singapore in Sec 3). I know her personally, and she was a GEPer anyway. (Ex-HCI student who just got her results)

For what it's worth, I had to do conversational Malay and can't speak a single word of Malay now. Unless a student puts in effort to study the language more intensely on his/her own, he/she can never be fluent and \"trilingual\". The level of proficiency is no where near that of O/A level 3rd Language.

There's no need to disparage other people - getting 9 distinctions is a remarkable feat, so kudos to all 6 students! :celebrate:
ONLY student. Pls clarify. I seen there are 6 achieving the result of nine distinctions. If MOE do not have a system to compare and announce the top student like in PSLE and 'o' level, let's give credit to the 6 students and their schools. Well done to all of them and the schools that produce the 6 students.

I was taken aback when I first read this. But if you read carefully, it isn't incorrect. Read again.

\"ONLY student in Singapore to have scored distinctions in nine subjects at 13 Academic Units, including distinctions in two H3 subjects and an A1 in Higher Chinese\"

He is the ONLY student to have scored 9 distinctions which include distinctions in 2 H3 and an A1 in higher chinese.

The other students either only has 1H3 or get A2 in higher chinese. You see the subtleness in the language. This kind of language skill is very common in the websites of more experience JCs. RV seems to have get a hang of it.

in the 1st place, why fight over such a trivial title such as top scorer? what is important is what they do with these top scores right?

The HCI girl already has a scholarship, does the RV boy has one? of course, even if he has one, can both of them get a place in the top universities overseas?

http://www.hci.edu.sg/ViewEvents.asp?EID=138

look at the top students from RI. even though they got A2 in chinese, one of them has gotten a gold medal at the International Chemistry Olympiad, another silver at the same olympiad and also numerous medals in mathematics olympiads representing Singapore. I think it is even more remarkable to get all these accolades on top of the 9 distinctions. you just need to be a mugger, amongst the top x% in every subject in singapore to get straight As. But gold/silver medals in international competitions?

You can argue who is the king of the molehill, but I'm more interested who is the king of the mountain. time for the toad in the well to get out man.
It all started because certain school claims that Koh Ming Ming is the top scorer of the nation. I agree with you that what is important is what they do with the scores. Another more simple way to say it is that \"Exam results is not everything.\" Even some scholars didn't do quite well as expected in their later career. I have seen International Chem Olympiah medalists switching to business admin courses in their 30s after wondering around in research institutions for years. Intelligence doens't seem to be helpful if one does not know what to do with it either. When the toad come out of the well, he may as well realise that success in life, afterall, is not so straightforward to measure.

I like all of six of them who said that their ambition is to serve others in the future.

I read in the TODAY papers yesterday - there was an article over this controversy. It said that HCI gave out a press release on Friday, claiming that they have the top scorer of the nation. Wah, so the newspapers actually didn't do much of their own research/investigation, huh? ;D

Guess the journalist took the easy way out. Also, sometimes articles are written by ex-students so there may be a bit of biasness. Shows we should take what we read with a pinch of salt.

Ha ha - the local newspapers don't seem to check facts. Just look at the apologies that they issue for mistakes made!!! RV should complain! Either report accurately or do not report at all! It is misleading. You can't say that it does not matter - it is a matter of FACT and priniciple! :x

I don’t know her very well, like I dont know if she’s a scholar per se,

but she does seem to come to Singapore alone and stays in boarding school? And she is older, that’s certain.
I heard she should be top because she got A1 in HMT too what.
Other results:
GP: 42.4% A
Math: 809 people exactly, 73.6%
They don’t announce results of econs, just put A+B so it could be misleading.
A lot of people get 8As just that they announced 5 =.= okay on the intercom.
I heard a lot of people think HCI never done well this year, its true since last year we got more people with 9As.

Being an HCI student, I can confirm the results 🙂

Koh Mingming was my senior in CLEP. CLEP has produced top scorer for HCI for 3 years running I think?
She's a china scholar and took French as well, so she's \"trilingual\"..
From the 1st time I saw the announcement on Koh Ming Ming in the news, I was already of the impression that she is a local. Today's news interview confirms that she is. Certainly not a china scholar. Are you sure you know her? And that you are from HCI?

Below was published on NYGH’s website. What is your interpretation? RGS is yet to publish this year result but have last year’s result on their website. I guess NYGH cohort size is around 450 (similar with RGS)

Congratulations to our Batch of 2008 on their Excellent GCE ‘A’ Level Results
38 of our students scored straight As in all subjects.

79 of our students obtained perfect scores of 90pts for University Admission.

230 with As in at least 3 H2 subjects.

78% have As in Physics, 75% have As in Geography and 74% have As in Maths.

We congratulate Koh Ming Ming (Class 414 ’08) on her achievements as the top female scorer nationwide with 9 distinctions.
