We did something similar earlier this year. I started with asking my p4 boy what is his target. He said 240. After going thru a List of schs with him, we concluded that to have at least 4 choices, he needs to comfortably hit 245 n above. Anything below 242, he'll go to a band 3 sch a stone's throw away from home cos it make sense due to distance. Anything below that sch's cop, I will choose for him most probably emphasise on distance as the few band 5 to 7 schs around our area, I roughly know which r the less desired ones.

Think I asked b4 but here I go again-is 50min transport time including waiting n walking, reasonable for sec sch commuting? What is your tolerance limit?
If it's within 1 hour should be fine and not more than that.

I previously taught in Secondary schools and many students require 1 hour to 1.5 hour travel (one way). My observation was that those who had to travel further were not very much affected by the distance. In fact, most of them seem to have better time management.

I think 1 hour is quite alright.

And yes, please don't use the word 'CHECK' anymore. It doesn't help. Tell them to 'RE-DO' the questions, especially those which they were not too confident of.

And encourage them to do 'space planning'. Write neatly starting from the top left of the space given. Draw a line on the right for working. This allows them some space left to re-do the question. Many of them told me, \"It's not that I don't want to redo the question, I have no space to redo!\" Then we stare at the paper, the answers were scribbled all over the place, random spaces/gaps in between. It's true - there's no space left!

          Hope this helps! 😄

Wow! Mrs Wong, thank you so much. So much things to handle and I didn't even realise that we need to take note of this \"space planning\". Will share with DS about this.

During travel time students get a chance to relax, my DS normally travels for tuition and he told me that during his travel time he gets a chance to relax and mind gets refreshed. Brain is all ready to absorb the next set of coaching.

This is what I commonly observe with my students. They are great kids, just tend to be on the messy side. Show them the benefits of neat and tidy work and they will feel proud of being able to achieve it.
I have had students who can solve all the questions, but sadly, lost a lot of marks due to messy and hap-hazard working (his number sentences and workings were all over the place, not systematic listing).

If you have younger kids, it's a good habit to start young. For P1 and P2, they might still need to draw lines to help them write neatly.

Space planning not only applies to school work but also their everyday life. Space allocation for their study table helps them to be organised and with organisation, they will feel less frustrated and probably be able to concentrate better.
There's always a 'feel good' factor being at a neat and tidy desk. 🙂

Is it true that the kids are not allow to use correction tape & fiction pens during the exam? That is what my boy’s teachers told the class.

                  mummy so kiasu:

                  It's not encouraged due to:
                  - Correction tape may peel off or stick to another page, causing what's written to be illegible
                  - Friction pen, though erased off, can resurface again after some time

The best is still to encourage:
                  - Non-liquid/gel ink ball point pens
                  - No correction tape or liquid paper; Cancel neatly with pencil if needed (just in case they change their mind and want the answer they've cancelled, they can simply erase the cancellation marks)

I m back… Had been really busy for the past 2 weeks for my DS various competitions and am glad is all over now. I am just finished reading with all the past posts;)

DS will have his oral on Monday and he has been missing classes for his competitions and is playing catching up now. Tons of backlog to clear and am worried that he is not well prepared for his oral on Monday and coming SA1. Just keep my fingers crossed!
Talking of "dream school", for my DS, he has been talking about one particular school since he was in p3, I always encourage him to keep his options more open so that he will not be too upset if he can’t make it. He has since adding in one or two more choices and hopefully he will now put more focus in his studies. The last 2 weeks he was totally switch off due to competitions and I couldn’t do any revision with him at all!

When my son was in P3-4, the teachers always remind them to check their work. The meaning of check is re-do. But these kids will just flip the pages and play with their pens, rulers etc etc.
My son is talkative but he better knows what to say and what not to. Don't be in a hurry to finish the exam...always reminding him.

100% true. My DD also does the same. She will also say that she checked for three or four times and found one or two mistakes (not sure true or she just says to satisfy mummy). But when the paper comes home, :stupid: She will give a sorry face. :slapshead:

Now CANNOT say 'check'. SAY 'RE-DO'.
I always tell the both of them, do not rush through the paper. What for ? Work so hard for this exam and don't get it done properly is so stupid.
Teachers always tell me during parent-teacher meetings that kids play with stationery instead :faint: when paper is marked and returned, they have a sorry look.[/quote]Ok, I ask my DD to redo rather than just check. Seems to be a good idea. Thank you.
